I'm shopping around as well... so far it's either Herman Miller or Steelcase, but I'm trying to find some local places where I can actually sit in them first.

Has anyone ever tried one of these ball chairs? It seems like a gimmick to me, but I've got a friend who swears by it (but he doesn't spend nearly as much time in chairs as I do)

I love my ergohuman

Task chairs are best for this kind of job. I was going to go for the Aeron by Herman Miller but you can't get it with a headrest which is a key part of a chair for me.

HM Aerons aren't all that...

They're sexy as hell but as far as comfort... I've had better.
