Right now I am doing Thin Lizzy the most, but it of course changes a lot, I have more than 1800 records at home and wouldn't want to get into more discussions as I am able to discuss music for hours.

Since I got their streak of albums from "Fighting" till "Black Rose" that is tough to match, I barely drive not to listen to them. It was not easy and sometimes you have to listen to everything ten times till you get the right feel, but I am sure this love will last forever.

You can say all those cliches such as underrated band / pioneers of the twin guitar solos and unisonos / whatever, but I would also mention this is one of the very few bands in the history where lyrics keep up with music..

I remember I had a chance to chat with John Sykes who is their last lineup guitarist who made it big time later on with Whitesnake and revivals Thin Lizzy he mentioned Phil Lynnot to be an incredible personality, only comparable to Hendrix.

Now I would like to look for a book regarding Thin Lizzy and / or Phil,

Here is a live take of one of my most favourite songs of all time:

https://youtube.com/watch?v=XsIubn5Pp6s

Guess what - it's a slow ballad, I guess you're just getting softer as you're gettin older.. watch out for some great soloing and feel the catarsis at the end..

Nice to see Thin Lizzy getting some love.

I listen to that stuff regularly... Phil was one of the best, without going tinto guitar tech here, they had a sound man, still love hearing his guitar sound, and often play songs over and over listening to his picks.

rip Phil.

They sure are the band that will be with me forever.. some stuff tough to get in to the ear for the first time, more like for the fifth or tenth time, but once you get used to their style then it just never gets old..

I would even want to see the John Sykes Thin Lizzy revival if they would be around, Scott Gorham is still there, I guess it was Marco Mendoza on bass? not sure

You are right when you say you have listen to the song a few times until you really get it and understand the bands style... How do you know so much about music?

ok, guys you may not like my way of thinking but to me, bands who broke up etc shouldnt even be counted.

the best band ever should go to ZZ Top, for being the longest lasting three piece band, and possibly one of the best guitarists on the planet, Mr Billy Gibbons.

sure Pink Floyd is good, and of course majority will say Zepplin, considering the track record of both those bands, they would recieve a low grade for partnership, and "band" mentality - considering their egos led to their breakup.

ZZ Top still going strong and still together.

One of my favorite bands, and thats why I vote them BEST BAND EVER.

Not bands who couldnt stay together long enough or stay alive to put out music/...

I guess it's an addiction since I was a kid, started with a heavy metal in the late 80's, then old school rock / bluesy stuff / then I am proud to live through the seattle scene movement / I even dare to say I know a bit about the jazz / fusion scene as I interested in that too in a certain period.

Then I got an old bass for my 16 birthday and played for 18 months every day at least one hour, until I was ready to play in my first band.

But as far as we were and are top friends and the guitar player is a guy who I know since childhood and would kill for him, we were never able to agree on the musical direction, as I also always preffered to play something rougher and heavier than my mates. Btw. they just won a recent national contest and are releasing their first record soon (not with any big brand but partly on their own costs).

So I never got to make it myself, but I always remained seriously hooked, I like to read books about my favourite bands and to browse allmusic.com, even wrote about music a bit and played in a local college club to try to ressurect the rockin times (bands like Alice Cooper / AC DC / lots of 70's and 80's heavier but more like arena stuff ). I am sure there won't be a time when I would not be able to explore something I have never heard yet.

Well I am sure if John could talk he would give Jason a hard time, he was not an easy guy to cope with, but a genius on drums. Bill Ward from Sabbath was his neighbour from the same Birmingham quarter and used to drink with him a lot..

ZZ TOP are super cool, too bad they are mainly connected with their 80's era.

Recently I seen a video from 1980 - Essen Rockpalast - to play this in a trio - killer concert! Billy Gibbons sure is one of the very underrated guitarists, he has great riffs, perfect feeling and seriously recognizable guitar sound.

For anyone who knows only their recent stuff - I seriously recommend to check the 70's albums.

I think there are many bands that might not be regarded as "the best" but they sure can be mentioned as "super influental"

Meaning for example:

Iggy Pop and the Stooges - now that was such a rough detroit punk rock, they could kick the Sex Pistols ass anytime and started in 1969

Black Sabbath - never gets old and they had the most moribund and vicious sound that ever hit the post hippie era, they killed it and never failed to influence the heavy metal movement to come in the late 70's

Velvet Underground - if you want to call something avantgarde, but not dissolved in "symbolism" and pose, you should check Velvet - they started in 1966 and were probably the most original band out there, needles to mention writing about stuff like drugs was still not yet in vogue

Vanilla Fudge - some of the most instrumentally gifted formations of the 60's, started in 1965, with Carmine Appice on drums a serious influence on such superbands that will turn up later on as Deep Purple for example

great bands mentioned here, it seems there's still hope for good music

It's great to hear John Sykes name, I've been a huge fan of Sykes since the 1987 album by Whitesnake, his playing in that cd changed the face of hard rock & heavy metal guitar forever. His solo albums are great too and both Blue Murder albums, specially the debut, are classics.

I think I'm gonna give it a spin now!

Sure deal,

I really believe Sykes was the man that built the super succesfull sound of Whitesnake and it was their best lineup ever - till Coverdale fired them all, even in the videos for their most sucesfull 1987 album (there is "Whitesnake" and "1987" partially covering them but great stuff) is a completely different band already.

I still need to dig for his solo albums though.

Great choice......

If you want the check out a very good band not alot of people have heard about that are a cross between Pink Floyd and Tool. Then check out Floater

Anyone from the Pacific Northwest has probably heard of them but they are one of the most popular and most talented bands I have ever seen that have done their best to not become a huge mainstream act.

Yeah man, they're cool. Personally, I am into more heavier stuff though.

Listening to Morbid Angel now.

There are very few in the rock history to be able to write a song that's catchy, yet doesn't get old soon and doesn't sound silly or obvious.

For anyone who knows only their recent stuff - I seriously recommend to check the 70's albums.
well considering they put out more albums in the 70s then 80s, its not really their fault but the fault of people who dont know music.

ZZ Top only put out 3 albums in the 80s, and 6 in the 70s.

Billy Gibbons is not underrated though, only to people who dont know him, but to guitarists around the world he is a true virtuoso. Stevie ray Vaughn was in awe of Billy Gibbons and Billy even purchased a guitar FOR SRV. In fact, the guitar named "Main" is actually a lesser known SRV guitar, less talked about then the others, but it was UNIQUE and had a sound he loved, it was a gift from Billy Gibbons.

Quote:
This is another one of Stevie Ray?s lesser known guitars. Main was the custom Hamiltone Lurktamer Strat-style guitar, built by James Hamilton of Buffalo, NY. The guitar was given to Stevie as a gift from Billy Gibbons in 1984. Main featured a neck-through-body design, unlike any other guitar Stevie owned. The neck shape is similar to that of a Gibson Super 400 and very much like the neck on Number One. It?s fretboard is ebony with an SRV pearlroid inlay.

The pickups were active EMG?s with an onboard preamp. Stevie regularly used Main on stage for "Couldn't Stand The Weather" and "Cold Shot."
