They aren't getting rich off of being politicians. They move into the private sector and make 5-10 times what they make as senators. They're underpaid when you think about what they do for a living is running the most powerful nation !
I think they should be required to vote on every issue though, Which is a joke at this point. Some senators and congressmen vote 1 of 5 issues. This party crap is destroying this country. But Imagine how quickly we could go from being a great nation to a shitty one if there weren't these stale mates. The patriot act was passed because they didn't allow enough time to debate the pros-cons. Rather than debating they all unanimously voted and look how that worked out. I think sometimes you have to stand back and still admire how well our country has performed and how well we are performing today.

The thing you people don't seem to realize is that the only way the Dems could "stop the war" would be to shut down the government completely, the entire federal government, and leave our troops in a war zone with no supplies.

If they did you'd be burning them in effigy for that too.

They have a majority but it's a small majority, they can't overcome a filibuster in the Senate and they can't override a presidential veto. They didn't "lie" about anything to get elected, their power is limited by the number of seats they have.

I don't think it's a case of lying as much as having to deal with the fact that it's almost impossible for them to get any legislation passed when their fellow reublicans won't help them override the inevitable vetos that Bush will throw them... so the only way to get anything done is to package it with the war budget... because Bush needs that to continue his imperialist agenda.

The thing that surprises me most at this point is that any one is surprised that the government is stalled. I'm getting so sick and tired of hearing people bitch about who's fault it is. The fault lies across both sides of the isle. The last 3 months very few of our guys have died and fewer Iraqis have died. though still low the % of those saying things aare getting better in Iraq are going up. Also the war is slowly but surely becoming secondary as a reason for voting for someone. Al the republicans have to do if they give Bush war funds is to say they democrats are against the soldiers. All they have to do is show a few dead soliders and say if the dems had funded the soliders they'd be alive and the idiotic public eats it up.

I agree with this. It would require amending the constitution though, and that takes a very long time.

There are alot of powerful congressional members from small states that want to keep things the way they are because by their states being "swing states" they get alot more attention than they would if the popular vote decided the election.
That, in my opinion, is the main reason no real effort has been made to change this.

After getting screwed in the election of 1824 Jackson had plans on doing this when he won in 1828. He found out the reality of changing the electoral college was harder than he planned and gave up trying to get it changed.

This is a myth. When was the last time a presidential candidate really campaigned in Alaska or Hawaii? They don't. Why? Because Alaska is always going to vote Republican and Hawaii will vote Democrat. Same thing goes for states like North Dakota, South Dakota, Idaho and others. They will always vote republican. Minnesota and Massachusetts and DC will always vote Democrat. So candidates don't go to these states. Where do candidates go to? California, Florida, Ohio.
