Seriously what the fuck.... {RANT}

So I was a the mall today grabbing some xmas gifts and I swung by a t-mobile booth to buy a fancy new cell phone for the wife and the cunt behind the counter wouldn't sell me one....

Said they don't sell phones... they only sell phones to people buying service as well...

me: I'll take that one please. I already have t-mobile service so I just need the phone.
her: sorry we don't sell phones by themselves
me: i got both my wifes and my own service from this very booth last year!
her: sorry. can't help you.
me: /leaves

WTF Why have all those phones on display with their RETAIL price visible when you will refuse to sell me a god damn 400 dollar phone? Fuck you.

Unfortunately that is how it works sometimes. They were probably an authorized T-Mobile agent and not owned directly by T-Mobile. I used to work for a Verizon agent who normally wouldn't sell phones without contracts, but at times made exceptions to sell them at ridiculously high retail prices. The wholesale price on cellphones isn't as cheap as you would think, so with them selling the phones at retail they make minimal or no money. The commission they get on a contract easily pays for the phone and more.

If you have a sim card, you can often buy the phone unlocked through Amazon or other places. The booths themselves usually make nothing off the phones, only off the accessories and contracts, so they won't sell you the phone, hoping to use it to get someone to sign a contract.

i dont really get it myself now that i live in asia. sure the phones in some instances are more expensive.

but the selection is better and there are no service plans required. razrs sell for $150 here, just the US cellphone makers and their price fixing at best.

I ran into the same issue today. I was looking at a phone at Alltel today and was told that if I bought one, I would have to pay retail. I decided to think about it before I made an impulse buy. Turns out that my contract expired a few months ago so all I would have to do is cancel my service, then sign up for a new contract to get the phone for cheap.

America is so far behind Europe its a joke. The phone in this image is the Nokia 9000 series. Looks cool ?

Well i worked on this design more than 17 years ago. It was released 15 or so years ago and never made it to the USA. There is a ton of stuff from Japan, the UK and German you never see here because AT&T and all the other shit companies want to keep the American public paying for a shitty outdated system that needed replacing years ago.

They buy those phones at a higher price than you see them selling em for, they make their money when they receive their commission from the carrier after you signup for new service with them... you need to go a direct tmobile store not a reseller/agent, and even then I'm pretty sure you will be paying a higher price for the phone if you already are under a contract with them.

That was an awesome phone. I remember seeing it in the movie "The Saint" with Val Kilmer using it. I spent months trying to find it here in the states, and then discovering that I had to head over to the UK if I wanted one. Yeah, cell phone service over here is sooooooo behind the rest of the world.

Because it's probably a 599 or 699 phone, and they're discounting it hoping to make it up on service.

If you were at T-mobile or Cingular looking at a GSM phone, you can buy them unlocked on the internet. But if your wife has Sprint or Verizon, only phones made for those services will work.

I will also point out that there was a big article in the WSJ a week or so ago about how dicked up our cell phone service is and how it stifles competition and innovation. They pointed out that we can use any computer/device and service to access the Internet, but for cell phones we get locked in contracts that basically specify what equipment we get to choose from.

Sprint and Verizon are both going to allow open access, although I don't recall the particular timeframe atm.

I can guarantee you were at an authorized reseller. Although if they were listing the "retail price" and "contract price" separately I am not sure why they wouldn't sell it to you.

If it was a mall kiosk they may not have enough storage to keep up with demand and only sell to people activating service. Buying a phone outright from them earns them no profit, whereas people activating service probably earns them $250 from T-mobile. If they run out of a popular model of phone that could impact their bottom line.

Go to a corporate store and you should be golden.. I just checked T-mobile's website and it separates company-owned stores and authorized resellers on the store locator.

I told Sprint to Fuck-off a few years ago over the same issue, they wouldn't sell me the phone I wanted without a contract extention... It might ding my credit a few points by not paying them, but its a retarded system for sure!

just call t-mobile, tell them you're a loyal customer with 2 phones with them, and that you need new phones... You're willing to move to another company if they don't send new phones.. Watch them jump into action

we only upgrade our phones to newer ones if we get the lower prices. We have had good luck with alltel doing that. Usually need to wait until the plan is up and then do it, but we don't have to cancel, then sign back up etc. As long as the plan is past the 1 or 2 year contract then we are able to do it no problem.
