asteroid: our doomsday

holy shit... i'm watching a show about asteroids and the chance they could hit the earth. they're talking about how people think there's all these telescopes skimming the sky looking for asteroids, but they're not. they're saying that if a big enough asteroid were to hit a city like chicago, it wouldn't matter if the people of that city evacuated b/c the effects would just lead to a slower death. this guy was saying how he wants to be a direct hit... die immediately. they're making it sound like mad max. wonder why people get freaked out when they learn about this shit...

Because people believe that the government is spending our tax money looking for possible attacks/threats and we as people don't want to worry about it. So when you find out that the gvt isn't doing shit about asteroids, it freaks us out.

We have underground bases from the cold war. Able to support thousands of people for years. Most of us might die...but the human race would survive.

It is not a question of if one is going to hit but a question of when one will hit, according to our scientists. So ultimately the majority of all living things will be wiped out by an asteroid at some point in the future, unless we learn of a way to divert them before this happens. Providing mankind has not been wiped out by some other means prior to that time.

Yeah I've seen this one many times before..

I love this..

It's like a Hiroshima type blast going off every second for 13 YEARS! Yikes..

It's not a matter of if it's going to happen it's a matter of when it's going to happen..

They've only found 1% of near earth doomsday asteroids..

Yup we're not here forever.. One day we'll be gone.. Have fun while it last..

I doubt it will ever happen.
Look at the human race in 1900 - we have come a long long way in the last 102 years.
No doubt in my mind an asteroid will be on impact course at some point in time, but our technology will be improving all the time as well.
There are no asteriod expected to hit us anytime soon. I was looking at some chart showing asteroids and there is a possible concern (almost slim to none) that an asteroid could hit earth, hundreds and hundreds of years from now.

I think if something fucks us up it would be a virus or nuclear war, not an asteriod.

It could....... but it's MUCH more likely it won't happen at all during our lifetimes.

How long has it been since the last one? Very, very, very long...

I know I'm not going to worry about it.

BTW, just turned on TLC and it's on again right now.

Don't forget the chance of us fucking ourselves because technology advances too quickly... to the point where we can't control it.

If an asteroid did come, I'd probably grab a lawn chair, a six-pack, and a nice cigar and watch it come in.

I'd probably be naked too, just to be comfortable when I die.

i've seen the black holes... homer is in that show. black holes aren't a concern b/c we're too far out from the center of the galaxy. so knowing that- what if our galaxy were to collide w/ another. those are some great picks(pearl jam album cover)

Hey, just about everybody reading your post is going to be dead in about 80 years. After that, it won't matter.

We're all going to die of something.

Well, this is a fucker we have to watch out for next:

http://newton.dm.unipi.it/cgi-bin/ne...s:2001PM9;main

It will pass the Earth in 2005 and I hope it's not stopping by, because this thing is big!

On the other hand - don't worry. We can always send Bruce Willis to deal with it.

There's a computer connected to a satellite that is scanning the sky 24/7 which analyzes all of its data. By comparing previous images to current images, it can detect motion of asteroids. It reports data to real humans, so it can be verified and recorded. Because of this, most of the newest objects found in space are from this computer (I can't remember it's name) and it has been very difficult for astronomers to find anything that hasn't arleady been found by this computer.

I think with a bit more processing power, and some more satellites, we can eliminate the threat of a meteor hitting us without warning.

All that is left is to decide how to deflect the thing when a dangerous one is found.

Well, what do you think the asteroid craze in the 80's was all about?
