I got a quote for a 300k death benefit for $22.90/month, that sound about right? Any suggestions on what to stay away from or what to look for?

stick with a term policy....stay away from any type of wholelife , universal life or basically anything other than term. Term is pure insurance..the others add a forced savings plan that is not in your benefit. Make sure you have a retirement fund as well you only need insurance untill your self insured.
