I have very seriously looked into starting a trap, neuter and release program here in town. I talked to a couple of local vets here about working out some kind of deal for cheaper spay/neuter fees and vaccinations. I shit you not, one of these back woods, inbred, hillbilly asshole vets actually told me "Naw, I ain't gonna fix 'em on the cheap but what I can do for ya is put them down for 10 bucks a piece and I will even take care of disposal."

Everyone in this little shithole town seems to be against providing even the most basic care for these cats. To them, euthanasia is the only option. That has always been the city policy for feral cats around here. Clearly the population is growing despite the trap and kill policy they have always had. A reasonable person would have to conclude that their policy to control the population is completely ineffective. I can't get the city or local vets to cooperate with me at all. I could do this all on my own but would run out of money very quickly. Once I leave, I'll bet there isn't a single person in this town who would carry on. Unfortunately I will probably just have to put this on the back burner, forget about it and be thankful that I don't live here.

With winter here I might see if I can get a couple of the neighbors to allow me to place these shelters on their property. I doubt it though since my goal is to humanely control the population and give them basic care and the neighbors just want the cats gone. Allowing me to place a shelter on their property would just make the cats want to stick around. They probably wouldn't go for that.

Here is a link to a listing of 128 or so Animal Welfare Organizations in your state that might be of some help. link

Unfortunately the only one listed in this town is the city animal shelter. I've talked with a couple of no-kill cat shelters in Kansas and they really haven't been able to help me out here.

Well I think we are going to have to do something about that. I have one of the largest, if not the largest, animal helping shelter places in the country out in the middle of Utah. Best Friends Animal Society. They are awesome. I volunteer time to them once a year now. They take birds, bunnies, horses, cats, dogs, and just about anything else that was a pet and left behind, abandoned or abused. I will find out what they think you can do, or anyone living in a place that neglects animals can do. As Bob Parker said as the end of every show, ?Have your pet spayed or neutered, Good Bye everybody!?

You kill and I have no problem cooking. I was crying when I did it which didn't help. If anyone was around and saw me doing this they would cry too, unless they didn't have a soul. haha

But I told the boys that kitty finally died, I didn't tell them I shot him, and they made him a nice little grave with RIP Gray Kitty. Damn cat had me crying for 2 days and it wasn't even mine. It just sucks to have to be the one to do the actual killing. :(

thats so sad :(

anyway, i sent you $50
hope the kitties make it.

That kitty video is so cute. Stupid kitty and his little head sticking out like he is driving a bus. hahahahahahah

I found these links this morning. Cats are so awesome. They jump so high and are so balanced. It's amazing.

bump for Loryn

candyflip 11-26-2007 09:43 AM

My grandmother started trapping and fixing the wild cats in her neighborhood about 15 years ago. At that point she had 23 cats she was feeding daily. As of this past week, there is only 1 cat...who was the last kitten from one of the last litters of kittens. She's an outdoor "homeless" cat who's been living in their garage for almost 15 years.

ADG, that homeless comment is just retarded

homeless PEOPLE have quite a bit more logical choices than animals like baby kittens

GREAT thread Loryn, i'll note to send a small donation next week after my vacation, i know how every little bit does/can help

(btw i recently became a father of 2 baby kittens that were left on the street of Bangkok to fend for themselves, living under a car, when pooring down rain, i couldnt help but to take them in, now i love them SO much, my little baby bitches hehehehe, so spoiled!!!)

Here's a pic of a pretty little guy that used to hang out in my backyard. I think his family left him behind when they moved:( He's fixed already, but I wanted to trap him and take him to a shelter, because he's very cute, friendly, and highly adoptable. Unfortunately, he doesn't come around anymore since I got a new dog. Last I saw him, he appeared to be well fed, and was chillin' on a tall fence next to a cat-sized possum, guess he found a new family...:Oh crap:Oh crap:Oh crap

That's awesome!! I've never heard of those little boxes for the feral feline.

The kitty I'm holding in my profile photo was one that I was fostering. She and her sister found a home right when I sent them back to the shelter though. They would have been strays had the person who found them not found them. I pretty much help out by fostering. It gives the house so much joy too.

Considering the circumstances of why you did it, that was the most noble and humane thing you could have done for him. He was suffering enough already. It is painful to have to do that, but you have to feel good for ending his suffering.

OMG that is so sweet. I can't believe someone would leave baby kittens out in a street in the rain. That is so good that you took them in. It makes my heart warm. Thank you for saving them! :)

Thank you. I had to do it for the kitty, but it was so hard. His little grave will be around for a long long time.

He is still a baby. It's amazing how kitties adopt humans. I am glad he found somewhere to live. Keep an eye out for him just in case. :thumbsup

My cat lived outside for years, through Canadian winters, before I got him. Took ages to get him used to the house but he's the biggest suck now. Good luck to you!

I know this thread is old and someone just randomly bumped it... either way I just sent you a donation... only because I was reading this thread with my own sleeping kitty at my feet. :)
