Lie detector technology will soon be helping Lincoln call centre staff to catch benefit cheats.
Claimants are to have calls screened in a new anti-fraud project being piloted in the city.
Call-takers will ask a series of questions, which will be recorded by voice-risk analysis software.
It will then compare answers to questions it knows to be true with potentially contentious answers such as a claimant's ability to work.
Callers' voices will also be monitored for stress, which will be used to detect if they are telling lies.
But critics say the method may not be accurate.
Andy Tysoe, manager of Lincoln's homeless charity the Nomad Trust, said: "Claiming benefits is a stressful and upsetting time for most people.
"Many find it to be a degrading time and some people are just plain nervous using a telephone."
The pilot scheme starts in January at a Jobcentre Plus call centre in Lincoln that handles claims from the Nottingham area.
