Canadian Government Study: P2P Users and downloaders BUY MORE MUSIC

Who'd a thunk it?

http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/epic/site/..._ip01456e.html
* When assessing the P2P downloading population, there was "a strong positive relationship between P2P file sharing and CD purchasing. That is, among Canadians actually engaged in it, P2P file sharing increases CD purchases." The study estimates that 12 additional P2P downloads per month increases music purchasing by 0.44 CDs per year.
* When viewed in the aggreggate (ie. the entire Canadian population), there is no direct relationship between P2P file sharing and CD purchases in Canada. According to the study authors, "the analysis of the entire Canadian population does not uncover either a positive or negative relationship between the number of files downloaded from P2P networks and CDs purchased. That is, we find no direct evidence to suggest that the net effect of P2P file sharing on CD purchasing is either positive or negative for Canada as a whole."

That doesn't explain why CD sales are at an all time low.

Also there's probably market segmentation involved

Thanks.

maybe it has something to do with the 54% increase in sales of individual songs.

while the total revenue has dropped it probably because you don't have to spend $10 bucks to buy an entire cd just to get the one or two songs you really want ($2-3 buck now).

Internet radio, XM, mp3 direct downloads (P2P + commercial )

Fewer people have cd players... everything is mp3... much smaller + holds more.

Could you imagine listing to your favorite tunes carrying a "ghetto blaster" and carrying and changing 50 - 100 cassette tapes and trying to look cool while walking around.

Later,

.

Because now we can actually DL or watch the videos/songs on sites like YouTube and buy what we know is good as opposed to before where we'd go to the record store, buy a whole buncha CDs and realize half of them were crap. I've bought alot of music because I discover them on websites, check them out and then buy the CD (for quality to listen too and add to my Ipod). I agree, sales have come down because consumers are more aware of what they're actually buying now.

i would hardly call it "fucked radiohead"

they made an offer people took them up on their offer , i dont see how anyone got fucked..

They didnt say " proove to everyone else you would pay for our cd by downloading our cd for free then pay after"

they said pay what you want.

and people did.

I would say the plan worked perfectly.

all i know is when i was young i remeber how it worked for me.. I got an allowance , on the weekend we would go to the mall and get records/tapes. IF when i had got there my friend said " hey don't buy that i have the cd for free right here" , i would have simply bought a radiohead t-shirt instead.

So while cd sales might be down merchandise could be way up.

I have a 1968 Mustang with an 8-track player, if anyone runs across un-warped cartridges at a garage sale let me know. I'll take anything except The Monkeys.

ps .... saving up for a cassette deck!

Well teenagers are likely the biggest part of the market for music sales in general. How many kinds now days don't have an Ipod or a cell phone that plays music?

The kids D/L single songs now for their Ipods and so on so of course CD sales will be at an all time low. Why get ripped off for $20 for a crap CD with one good song, when you can just buy the one good song for a dollar.

Good point. The business model is changing/needs to change.

Exactly. And that's why the old business model has to change. One possible hint would be the way DVDs are changing the movie video business model.

The thing is 100% of people downloading mp3 are music lovers, then they compare that to those who dont download mp3s, which may include a large portion of people that may not be music lover, or may not be that interested in listening to the latest album of whoever is hot right now..

I don't feel like analyzing their data and methodology, but come on, if it's possible to get something for free the sales will drop... the drop may be very small, maybe even unnoticeable, but it will drop for sure....
