That movie Sicko...
Tags: None -
Let me try to contribute, I have seen :
- "The Big One"
- "Bowling for Colombine"
- "Fahrenheit 9/11"
- this one
What I liked the most is the Bowling, the most insane to me was Fahrenheit.
"Sicko" is one ingenious fabulation - you gotta give the man a credit: what more could he do than to grab a bunch of 9 / 11 veterans and let them get medical treatment in Cuba?
Although I would probably have trouble getting insurance myself in US, you can't really compare the US healthcare with French - that's so wrong..
I am educated in bio medical engeneering myself so I had to maintain some overview about healthcare and France ALWAYS tops the charts in the quality of healthcare. Well no wonder if they strip the people off some of the most incredible taxes in the world.
Government vs. private Healthcare - unsolvable question, our healthcare is accessoble to everyone for free:
1) misused, there ARE long waiting times (geronts spending there their leisure time)
2) there ARE patients damaged by overworked and underpaid medical proffessionals (that's something not spoken about)
A surgeon makes somethin as 2.000 bucks a month..
3) on the other hand I have a cancer in the family and can't imagine there would NOT be free treatment
There is no way out, you can only try to compromise, you should have the choice to pay the model you can afford and that is suitable to your very own condition, as far as what I can say about that.Need hosting, cloud, CDN or solutions for your AI? "Bowling for Colombine" and "Fahrenheit 9/11" were both awesome and they dealt with serious topics while maintaining a humorous feel...Sicko was way tool left wing / bleeding heart for me.Let me try to contribute, I have seen :

My problem with Fahrenheit is that he went a bit over the top - you can beat the dead horse but it will only be funny up to a certain level.
And he actually helped the ultra Bush propaganda with that movie to identify what should they focus on with their dogmas..

The only thing I didn't like about Sicko was that he made other countries healthcare seem immaculate- no waiting times, free, excellent, etc. It was completely unbalanced.
I think he interviewed one person and asked if he had to wait, and the guy said no. WTF? A one man interview? Good research Mr. Moore.Travis - XBIZ

And as far as I lived in a communist country as a kid and a "left wing" country after that - I can't see ANYTHING left wing in that - simply because it's just so natural that medicals and healthcare are free or almost free for anyone and any other model seems weird.
BUT - I would be blind not to see the problems with the model - the issue is that this is so sensitive topic that not many politics will ever touch that and it took 18 years to push certain reform initiatives starting 1.january .Need hosting, cloud, CDN or solutions for your AI? He is allowed to have his opinion without being called a " stupid brainless fag " ....
Even Moore would concede that
I know that Asspimple is stoopid ... As he says, it is a FACT !

Yeah...he also conviently dodged the 50% tax rates some of these countries have.zThe only thing I didn't like about Sicko was that he made other countries healthcare seem immaculate- no waiting times, free, excellent, etc. It was completely unbalanced.

Good movie, but the Cuba thing was way over the top, I have been to Cuba recently, that must have been a special hospital for top party members, cause that that isn’t normal there.
Hell I bet the country has got only one MRI machine.
I love the US, I am a Canuck, but half my relatives are from there, the US has really gotta start taking care of everyone’s health.Need a High-End Custom Shoot?

Did you say that you didn't watch the movie? It sounds like you didn't watch it. You really need to see it. The message is simple. His extreme examples are used more for comedy than anything. Europe is A LOT older than the U.S. and somehow all of those countries make their systems work.
It is the system every "Western" country CHOOSES over all other available systems. All the countries could adopt our system, but none do. Strange.
We are the only country in the "Western" nation without universal health insurance coverage.
Also, wealth is relative. We also have 50% tax rate in the U.S. but somehow that doesn't stop the rich from being rich.Last edited by Hail To Deez Nuts; 11-21-2007, 02:32 PM.Comment

Another myth - UHC countries generally don't have taxes levels any different from the US. There are also extreme examples where taxation is almost next to nothing, but healthcare standards are on par with the US annually. We are based in one such country and pay $250/year for totally comprehensive healthcare.Comment

It's more like there are in general always HUGE profits in pharmacy and healthcare.. but nowhere in the world that huge as in US..Another myth - UHC countries generally don't have taxes levels any different from the US. The logic behind it is simple - if you would ever choose five times cheaper solution if the cheaper one is 95 pct. succesfull and the super expensive one 96 pct. succesfull, will you be able to justify that?
Also many medicaments are in fact duplicated classic meds just different name and package and price 200 - 500 pct. up.

Spot on manIt's more like there are in general always HUGE profits in pharmacy and healthcare.. but nowhere in the world that huge as in US..

Only familiar with the health insurance industry in the US via friends who got scammed (legally) for crazy insurance premiums. Another example, tho can't remember the actual prices - we had air ambulance cover (handy at the time when we were on a Caribbean island). The rates were something like $900/year for air ambulance to almost anywhere, but when the flight was destined for the US, the price shot up to just under $4000. It was actually cheaper flying across the Atlantic to the EU or to Canada than landing in the US.
Another example is... whatever it's called - stuff used as eyewash. It costs around $50 for a gallon of the core ingredient, but when this is sold via pharma corps, that $50 shows a return on retail sales of around $2.7million - crazy!! OK... you have to allow packaging/distribution and retailers profit in that, but doubt the pharma corps will go bust at that level of profit
