converting .mpg files for editing in Premiere!?

My friend gave me their sony HD video camera full of scenes they want me to edit.

I can import the files into premiere. But when I go to put them into teh timeline, they have no sound.

Do I have to convert them to AVI's??? (dearlordIhopenot)

Is this a prosumer Sony HDV camera like the Sony FX-1? If so, and you have Premiere Pro 1.5.1 or later, then you should be able to capture and edit natively in mpeg-2 (.m2t format I think it uses actually). You won't have to convert anything.

If it is a Sony consumer videocamera called "HD" or "high-definiton" format (not HDV), that records to a compressed, proprietary format of mpeg then you are going to need a plugin for Premiere Pro or do a conversion to AVI. There is one popular high definition format called AVCHD that a number of small consumer HD cameras use that is one such example of this.

I use it in conjunction with premiere all the time, it might be worth a shot.

That is super helpful.

vids are: MPEG2-PS
my premiere is: 1.5.1

The video imports okay, then looses sound when it put clips on the timeline. I guess it is due to their compression.

Why is there no audio in my exported MPEG file?

If you burn an NTSC DV project to DVD using the MPEG audio format, audio is not exported (MPEG audio is not supported by the NTSC DVD specification). By default, the DVD export presets available in Adobe Premiere Pro for NTSC DV use the PCM audio format. It is recommended that you use the default presets when exporting an NTSC DV project to DVD.

You need to select “DVD” in your multiplex setting to get audio and video in a single file, otherwise you get two separate files. See "Multiplexer preset options" in the Premiere Pro 1.x Help for details. See "MPEG multiplexer preset options" in the Premiere Pro 2.0 Help for details.

Eddie, you're right. PPro doesn't import files with an AC3 extension, but it did import ac3 audio embedded in mpeg files from DVD camcorders. The ad2mcac3dec.dll that was included in 2.0 allowed those ac3 files to import as stereo (but not 5.1). It looks like that functionality was removed or broken in Premiere Pro CS3, but the functionality still exists in Encore CS3. You can copy the file over from Enc to PPro and get the functionality back. You may end up breaking something else, but it does work to allow the AC3 audio stream in the mpeg file to import.

Now aren't you glad that they decided to bundle Encore with Premiere Pro?

Why is there no audio on the timeline?
Unplug your camcorder or change your playback preferences in Project > Project Settings > General > Playback Settings.

I don't know how to use premiere but you can convert it using VEGAS 7.0

Another GFY member had a similar problem with Premiere. The file played fine with other products as well as played in Premiere via the monitor. When he placed the video on the timeline, there was no audio. It turned out to be a conflict with another video software (a Pinnacle product) on his computer.

MPEG 1 and some mpeg 2/4 is Muxed (audio embeded in the video) So you have to Demux it, and then put the audio and video back together
Use this free software to extract your video to AIFF
http://www.squared5.com/
Then simply paste the AIFF audio file into premiere's timeline under the video your using.
