I have both .. two 32 LCD's and a 42" and 50" Plasma. I like the picture on the Plasma best. The quality seems higher because of the true black. I also don't get trails on actions scenes like i do on the LCD's .. someone once told me under 42 go with LCD and over go with Plasma. I was also told the one over my Fire Place should be Plasma. Hope that helps ya a bit .. I'm not a Video audio guy so its just my experience

Why not go to BestBuy/CircuitCity/Sears and see for yourself? Then buy online and save yourself a few hundred dollars. I chose the picture quality of plasma over the longer life of LCD, because why worry about what you'll be using in the year 2020? Also make sure you choose a 1080p model for true HD. I highly recommend the Samsung FP-T5084

Deeper blacks with plasmas, especially the Pioneers (I highly recommend them). And even if it has a five-year life -- which most likely is not the case -- you prolly want something better by that time anyway.

Plasma is best but if you watch an LCD for a week it isn't like you will notice a difference. Sort of the same thing as dimming the lights in a room. After an hour in the room your eyes will become accustomed to the change and you won't realize they are dimmer.

Ohh... and Plasma will burn the image on the screen so if you have lets say DirectTV and you leave it on a menu screen and forget about it... you are fucked... Now that menu screen will ghost forever on your TV.

Anything bigger than 40" go with a Plasma. If you watch a lot of sports a big LCD will annoy you. I'm buying a new tv this week and still can't decide which tv to get, the only thing I know is its defo gonna be a plasma.

Great suggestion (on where/how to shop)!

BUT - 1080 is highest resolution of High Definition, but 720 is also true high definition. In addition, I have read that your eyes can't tell the difference between 1080 and 720, so go for the less expensive 720! Some people have money to burn, so if money is no object, go for the 1080.

Don't stress too much and be happy with your new fun toy!

Another interestng fact...Most of our cable tv providors dont even broadcast in 1080p...they broadcat in 720i and if your tv is 1080p..the picture is automatically changed to 720i because thats the signal its receiving

That may be true for now but its only a matter of time before its not that way then you have to rebuy your tv. Plus for Blueray dvd's aint nothing better than 1080p.

I got my 46 Samsung 1080p for $1700. Worth the extra few hundred to me.

...yes but by the time they start broadcasting in 1080p ...the tv you just paid 1700 for will be $900 ..and will actually work to its full potential..wich it isnt doing now......

Although.. i belive if you get a 1080p DVD player your tv will show them 1080p..so there is a slight advantage..

Next year Spend more and get the 1260V

I like my LCD monitor.

They say that plasma has a sharper image, but you need to be able as to control the amount of light within the room... but if you do not have control over the amount of light within the room then the LCD is the better of the two also the LCD monitor will last a longer time because it runs at a cooler temperature.

I didn't want to have to replace Plasma and didn't like the picture of the LCD screens, so we went with a Samsung DLP. Can't hang it on the wall, but the picture, price and ability to hang around more than 5 years were enough to concive us.

LCD, brighter picture. Make sure you get one with a decent processor for watching fast sports and stuff. Some have problems with that.

It all depends on size. This last month's PC Magazine featured the points of this debate, so if you're buying, I'd suggest you pick up a copy before your news stand runs out.

With Plasma vs. LCD, it's really comes down to a matter of size. under 42 inch, go with LCD. Plasma can't match the sharpness. Over 42", Plasma. The rich dark colors can't be matched in LCD.

I had a Samsung 50" delivered to my house and I had it 1 week and it had to be returned. The picture quality was terrible and the HDMI ports were broken at the back which led to the cable falling out. I had a technician come out who said it was defo a tv fault and not all were like that, so I hope you have better luck than me.

I really wanted a Samsung as well but now it looks like I'm going with the Phillips or LG 50" instead. The one I'm going for isn't a 1080p but its still a pretty damn good tv.

My first LCD TV experience (not 15") was like: Uhm bigga LCD ( I have one 27" Samsung now cause nothing bigger fits room/furniture). I would go for Plasma, there's new model of Panasonic Viera, if I'm not mistaken it's TH42PX70.
LCD sux on cable TV in my country (analog).
Plasma is much better. 42" is enough, but remember to have distance from it about 3 or more meters. Else You'll find Yourself turning neck left & right while watching conversations :D

I've got a plasma, lcd and dlp in my house. I actually prefer the picture on the dlp, but the size and better pricing now make the plasma/lcd the way to go. I can't tell a huge difference between the plasma and lcd, but one thing I do like about the lcd is that it doesn't reflect when turned off. I get a lot of sunlight in my house and the plasma has very strong mirror like reflections when turned off and they can be annoying.

And ....

You might heard Plasma has much higher power consumption. But it's quite mistake. Plasma consumption is measured in Full brightness but LCD's are measured in Gray-Gray so in Full brightness there would be higher consumption. So in real Plasma consumes more, but it's not that significant as factorers values (Plasma vs. LCD)

if you have windows in the room you'll hate plasma due to the glare. on that note, I have a LCD and love it

I have a 46" Sony LCD which is pretty nice. And then a 65" rear projection that is about 5 years old. Both are solid tv's and I have no problems with either of them. Just remember your spending all that money on a nice tv, make sure you have a Hi-Def setup through your cable company or directv/dish network so you can take advantage of it all.

A nice speaker setup doesn't hurt either
