it's 9ft deep - I can't tell how far up the wall the scratches are but I'd guess 4-5 ft?

The white thing is a piece of flooring that fell into the hole.

The pipe is iron and goes virtically into the hole. It is just sitting straight up and down, but I don't want to pull it out of the pile of whatever it is in until I get down there. It would make a good poking rod if someone was.....nevermind

the very bottom cement it looks black in the photos, can you notice any SOOT or ASH anywhere around that area (mainly on the bottom)

and if so, check the "dirt" is it instead ash?

-Loki-

It may have been an entrance to an escape tunnel or a bomb shelter used used in ww1.

The tunnel may have been filled after the threat of the war was over

Naughty-Pages 11-15-2007 08:21 AM

It's not possible for the fingernails to leave marks on the well..

At least in my own experience.. i mean i know for a fact that the last 7 girls i put in our well tried clawing their way out, but none of them were able to leave marks..

halfpint 11-15-2007 04:18 PM

Have you gone down into the well yet?

i have two house cats that can jump 6 ft straight up.

those scratch marks were not made by a human. do not get carried away. human nails are flat and broad. something sharp, strong and pointed made the wall marks. feline nails are curved to increase strength and pressure on the point of the nail.

cats primarly use three claws. same with dogs i believe.

TRUST ME - I am hoping there is nothing down there. The last thing I want it to discover a crime scene under my house. Especially since that would lead to the house being torn apart by investigators. However, merely finding this chaimber under a trap door, hidden by flooring is not the only reason I believe there to be unanswered questions.

I have someone skinny coming over tonight or tomorrow and we are gonna get to the bottom of this, litteraly.

Dude you better tie a rope on your ass before you enter that hole.. Other wise in about 50 years some other dude will be posting on here asking about fingernail marks and bones in a hole that he found under his house. :warning:warning:warning

I don't think there were a lot of bombers flying around between 1914 and 1918. :2 cents:

After Shock Media 11-18-2007 01:28 AM

Reminds me of a food storage cellar. The type used to lower and keep buckets of apples, potatoes, and other assorted long term seasonal food crops. I have seen some where they could store a few buckets. They would reach the buckets with either a hooked rod or a rope with a hook on it, so that they could raise and lower the desired bucket.

Though I am just speculating.

shermo 11-18-2007 03:18 AM

Hmmm...Looks like ash. Quite possible it was used to incinerate bodies. Would be interesting to run DNA on the stuff.

JayCabi 11-18-2007 03:54 AM

Matt 26z 11-18-2007 04:36 AM

It could have been a primitive septic tank for a bathroom. They were still using outhouses back then. The dark flaky material on the bottom is certainly consistent with dried up sewage.

Is that a pipe just above the hole?

JayCabi 11-18-2007 04:49 AM

Yup sure looks like a pipe.. I'm with you on this one..

Ron Bennett 11-18-2007 06:15 AM

You say that room was added on - that's an important clue...

Based on what you posted along with what others here have speculated, my guess is it's an old cesspool.

Ron

Darkland 11-18-2007 07:38 AM

Not sure if you have thought about this but there are several odd things about this hole in the ground.

1. The obvious, Why would someone build a room onto a house to cover what can only be described as a well?

2. Then the room wasn't good enough so then they had to hide the opening by making a trap door that allows for it to be hidden from view. You did say that you had never seen or even been told that it was there right? You found it by accident right?

3. Whatever made those marks didnt just scratch once and make perfect marks. It is concrete not butter. And even if it was soft or crumbly you would not get those perfect looking scratches. They had to be gouged again and again in the same area to get them to look the way they do.

4. Now for me, this is the creepy part. The bones.. Now I would be willing to consider maybe that an animal was kept down there and maybe caused the damage. But if the animal had died down there the bones would be all together and NOT scattered about. So either something was being feed down there or someone decided to through their left overs down there which I find most unlikely. That would be a bizarre behavior that most certainly would be repeated and there would be more bones.

That alot of weird shit. I would definitely call the police. They will do all the work for you and figure it out if there is anything to it. If there isn't no big loss, your tax dollars at work for you.

shekinah 11-18-2007 05:05 PM

Call the police for thorough investigation...

Scootermuze 11-18-2007 05:35 PM

By looking at the entrance, and the pipe, it could have been a cistern

like this one

The pipe could have been to collect rain water from downspouts..

aico 11-18-2007 06:00 PM

I go with the septic tank theory.

Ron Bennett 11-18-2007 07:42 PM

In my view, do NOT get the authorities involved until such time you actually observe something that truly requires their attention, such as finding human bones - so far you've mentioned only seeing small animal bones - nothing illegal about that.

Calling the authorities, unless absolutely necessary, will likely create far more problems for you.

My suggestion is to cover-over the hole ... or better yet fill it in with sand / gravel, etc to reduce the chance of someone else someday accidently finding / falling into it.

On a related note, if you / friend plan to go down into it, be sure to use a rope (ideally a safety harness) secured by another person when decending down into it; wear gloves and old clothes that can be easily discarded if need be - from the pics, the hole looks relatively beneign and of little danger, but you indicate the floor may not be solid and could hiding something else, so again, safety is critical when exploring it.

Good luck - let us know what you find - post more pics, etc if anything exciting turns up.

I'd believe the scratches were made by an animal and not by human (based on the animal bones seen on the photos).

IamShaider 11-21-2007 07:48 PM

age old septic tank maybe?
