What's up with my USB mouse ??

Ok, this is a pretty strange situation here. I've been having problems with my old USB mouse or so I thought, so I went out and bought another mouse. Well, the new mouse is an optical mouse that's scroll wheel lights up (IBM Optical Navigator). After getting it installed, it seemed to go ok, I updated the mouse drive and everything.

Well, now whenever I boot up, the mouse doesn't always wanna work, I can see that it doesn't light up all the time, so I assumed that it was the USB ports on my computer and I went out and bought a PCI 4 port USB card and I have the same problem with it. Pretty much every time I boot up my computer, my mouse doesn't work, it's not lit up, so I know that it's not the mouse, that it must be something with the USB ports. What it'll do when it boots up is the wheel has a real dim light that flashed a couple of times, but that's all that it does.

What's odd is that after it boots up, I can unplug the mouse from one USB port and plug it into another and it works just fine. If it works just fine like that, why doesn't it just work on boot up ?

Does anyone have any ideas on what I should do, perhaps uninstall the driver and give it another shot. I already redid it once and haven't had any luck with it.

Try different batteries first. NEVER flash a bios chip until its the absoLUTE last thing and THEN take it to a real pro or two to verify its needed. Flashing a bios can be disasterous let alone foolhardy.

I've had similar problems with every USB device I have ever owned under several different operating systems. Usually, it only happens if the computer crashes or is restarted without a proper shutdown. Detatching and reattatching the device fixes it for me.

Thanks for the ideas guys, I'll go out and pick up a battery tomarrow to pop in there and see if that works, if not, I'll have to go with a bios upgrade. Looking at my motherboard's website, the last bios upgrade was way back in like April 2001, so there hasn't been anything come out since Windows XP has been out.

Odd problem, never encountered it myself, I've had trouble free USB useage with many devices in OSs from Win98, 2k, ME and XP..

He's right about the BIOS, that is the VERY VERY VERY last thing you'd want to try, especially if you've never done it yourself. If you don't use a compatible BIOS it could render your motherboard useless and hence your computer useless until it's replaced.
