PLATTSBURGH -- Lacolle and St. Paul Isle Noix fire departments were delayed as they tried to cross the border on their way to the Anchorage fire late Sunday night.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers stopped fire trucks from the two Quebec departments at the Route 9B crossing in Rouses Point as they responded to a Mutual Aid call.

Chris Trombley, department fire coordinator for Clinton County Emergency Services, said there was some confusion at the border as to which firefighters had identification and which did not.

"The officers ran the vehicle ID to see if it (the fire truck) was legal and checked to see if the people were legal."

He did not know exactly how long the firefighters were held up, characterizing it as "a bit of a delay."

Trombley said he is not sure whether the landmark restaurant would have been saved had the departments been able to enter the United States faster, but he said the delay did strain firefighters battling flames in Rouses Point.

WTF!?!? why would they cross into the USA?? seriously unless it sometime of extreme natural disaster or some type of terrorism... I can't see them just waving them on.

Happens often along the border, the first of the excavation teams at the WTC were from Quebec if I'm not mistaken, and fire aid from Canada goes south all the time.
As for the lengths to cross all you have to do is drive a couple of miles from a border station and walk across. Not that tough if you really want to do it.

priorities were indeed wrong. CA should have authorized firefighters to stop by home depot and lowes and hire all the mexicans they could find to help right when the fires started.

Seriously though my uncle for the longest time was in charge of taking prisoners out of jail to fight such fires and they would get a little extra time knocked off or sometimes just some extra privileges depending on their terms. If prisoners can be used for fire fighting, ditch digging, fire breaks, food lines and the rest why the fuck not hire illegals?

All Canadians are terrorists. It's quite alright for us to make USD but it's not ok for us to spend in the US, because we might be terrorists or trying to steal their jobs.

With the USD sucking as hard as it does, they should be blowing the border wide open to encourage Canadians to get in and shop... get the currency flowing again.
