Do you ever tell people what you do for a living?

I stopped telling people I even do anything with the Internet, right now I'm "unemployed, making money off stocks"

I am not ashamed of peddling porn on the net, I just am sick of people asking "is it easy? how can I start?"

My friends with NO computer experience whatsoever are always houndng me to show them how to upload html to geocities and make a million dollars with porn. Pisses me off

I run my own web design company. I actually find it somewhat embarassing to tell people I peddle porn, plus I have no interest in answering people's questions when they actually find out that's what I do.

I say "I'm starting two web services at the same time."

I explain what the non-porn one does. That acts as a filter for tiring out the brains of the more feeble audience. I then explain that while the first service is socially significant, it is being done *for itself* as a purpose rather than for a business purpose. That really loses them. Then, if there is enough curiosity left for them ask what the OTHER web service is, I tell them it's a promotional site. By then, they just blindly accept anything conclusive sounding. I'd forgotten how easy it is to lie by omission.

I used to tell people what i do but if its women (and no offence to anyone here at all...) they often ask if i know how to set them up with the sexy chat phone lines!!

I just say I do web-design. 50% of the people stop asking right then and there. The other 50% that proceed to ask some more, and I just bullshit and throw in ridiculous terms until they have no idea what's going on. God bless talking about stuff that has nothing to do with web design.

I can see it would depend on what kind of people you know, and where you live though.
