I really don't understand Canada's priorities...a country with only 57,000 people in its military is in absolutely horrible shape and quite simply would NEVER be able to protect themselves if they were attacked (if I were Canadian, this would be a very scary thing to me). Not to mention the poll that stated 85% of Canadians (including Chretien based on his comments) thought that America was partially to blame for the 9/11 attacks. Good lord. I could go on and on, but it really doesn't matter. I really couldn't care less if their skies are beautiful or if their sporting teams suck; that's all inconsequential.

Well, and who is going to invade Canada? The United States? Not too likely. If China or Russia invaded Canada, it would be pretty much regarded as an attack on the United States (read: insanity for either country to attempt), so I'm pretty mystified as to what your pont is here.

We can agree to disagree, but I cannot even fathom living in a country that doesn't have the capacity to protect itself without the help of other nations (read: USA). It seems to me that you are saying "Why does Canada need a full military when the USA is its neighbor?".

I think Canada is smart to not build a huge military. What would be the point? If for some bizarre reason any country decided to attack Canada, the US would be in there in seconds to help kick ass. So Canada gets a free ride on the US taxpayers dollar. Canada can spend more on education and healthcare because it knows it doesn't have to spend money on military.

But that's a pretty lame way to look at things don't you think?

David Harris "Counsel for Canadian Security" claims that the pull out in Afghanistan was because they didn't have the resources, or people needed to rotate a squad.

That is indeed scary.

Other than that I have no problem with Canada.

and a dozen other conflicts in the world, Canadian forces have shown themselves well, both as fierce fighters and as peacekeepers. Our peoples have both given and recieved aid from the USA and Great Britain as well as a host of other nations, and we have received much thanks over the years from those countries for sending forces to fight and die at their (your) sides.

In times of war, trust me when I say Canadians do what we need to do to get the job done. You've also got to take into consideration that we are only 1/10th the population of the USA, thus our economy is much more burdened by huge military spending. And the most important point in this issue regarding Canada is this.... we are a peaceful peace-loving nation. Our leaders are statesmen, diplomats, scientists etc. But make no mistake here..... our soldiers and our pilots are some of the best trained in the world. Our military is small, but believe me we can hit hard when we have to. Ask any military man in the world that has actually been in battle alongside Canadians and he/she will tell you the same.

Military power does not tell whether a country is in good shape or not. Anyone saying otherwise does not know what factors contribute to being in good shape.

The Canadian political system of not being too aggressive when it comes to foreign issues is an intelligent political structure and for a part protects Canada from problems seen today in other countries. (terrorism).

We have socialized medicine here in Australia and it works fine. Governments have been thrown out of power here (or not elected) because they even considered fucking with it. Don't talk about bullshit hypotheticals when the reality is here AND working. People can choose a higher level of care if they wish by taking out insurance but the government system, by and large, still provides people with an adequate level of healthcare. There are waiting lists for non-essential, elective surgery. No system is perfect but I don't know of one Australian who doesn't appreciate their MEDICARE card and the benefits it provides. The system is funded through a 1.6% levy on an individuals taxable income.

If you ask me, private insurance only really benefits the rich, who can afford it, doctors (also rich), insurance companies, private hospitals and the drug companies.

It's sad to see someone hanging onto ideology when successful examples of socialized medicine are popping up all over the world. I've also never met a Canadian (and I meet a lot travelling) who didn't like their system of socialized medicine.
