Question: What would you do?

I know that the majority of posters here make a living in adult, but by no means are making enough money to be considered rich.

With that said, what woud you do ,if as a result of higer oil prices etc., if you no longer had the money or resources to feed your family?

Would you resort to violence? Would you be willing to steal from your neighbor?

How far would you be willing to go to provide for your family and loved ones?

The moment my first son was born i had this "switch" in my mind...
nothing else matters when it comes to my kids...
of course i wouldn't go kill people just to get him some better candy, but if needed i don't think there would be anything that could stop me.

That said, the only thing I would ever get violent against is the imminent threat of harm to myself or family - and only as a last resort.

And I don't think I'd ever resort to theft.

Part of what makes men men is they stand on their own two feet... taking something that isn't yours would detract from that, I think, and perhaps do more harm than good in the long run.

Very interesting comments, but I still don't think "YOU" get it.. I am talking about a collapse of the US economy and prices skyrocketing to the point where milk and bread become so overpriced that the average american can't afford to pay the price to feed our families...

I think that any person, under the right circumstances, is capable of anything.

But I think I would find a plot of land in BFE, manage my own little farm, build my own still, and carry a shotgun around with me before I'd resort to stealing anything from someone else, or being violent to another individual who harbors no violent intentions to me or mine.

Money's little more than a psychological experiment, anyways.

Well, kinda specific, but since you asked, I guess it would depend on a few things... how much food do I have? How often do people try to steal from me? Has this individual tried to steal from me before?

Is this guy willing to work? maybe society has collapsed to the point it's time to start organizing in communes.

barring that, reactions could range from me offering him some food all the way to putting some salt buckshot in his ass. Doubt I'd get lethal over simple theft.

My point is D, is that if it came down to "you and your family" eating or someone that didnt havr the foresight to protect their family eating, I dont think you would have a problem using deadly force.

Deadly force? Over some food? I'd have to be pretty hard pressed to kill a man over food in the continental U.S. It's not like we live in the middle of a desert - there's nutrition to be found everywhere in the wild.

As I've expressed before in other threads, I've trained myself in the use of firearms for a reason, and I absolutely know I could kill a man - but I'd expect it to be for the right reasons - and stealing food from a garden just doesn't make the cut.

But I think we may have lost the focus a bit... (but hell, it's late, we're allowed to do that, i guess) we're already talking extremes of extreme circumstances. The shit would have to hit the fan pretty hard for me to pick up and leave Los Angeles in the first place... and I'm sure there'd be some plan in place with several degrees to step down into (using public transpo, turning the computers off at night, selling furniture, etc) before I came anywhere near that level. If things were really that bad, I'm sure there'd be lots of public advice on how to handle the situation to refer to, as well.

My initial point is still where my mind is at... there's always a solution - and killing another human being - as you seem to want to get me to justify doing - just doesn't solve for very much in my humble opinion.

For those who STILL don't get it, marketsmart is referring to the law of the jungle, pretty much. While I do agree the proposed scenario is still somewhat of a longshot, it is no longer as unthinkable as it was only a year or two ago.

D and Damage, Yes, I hope this question is a total longshot, but my point being is how far would you be willing to go.

But before that persoanlly I would rather see an uprising against the govt. Do you thing the govt. is worried about this scenario? Honestly, I dont think they are, but they should consider all outcomes. Although I am not a dommsdayer, I think its worth debating...

Personally, I'd just get another job. Work more. You know ... grow my own food in my back yard. There's plenty of ways to not be an asshole to your fellow man when things go to shit. Most people just resort to violence or theft because it's easy.
