Shallow water blackout, most likely performing a "turtle rodeo". These huge green sea turtles would surface and he would grab on to their caripace and hold on as the turtle darted down.

The turtles did this, as they thought it was a predator, when in actuality they weren't. The turtle would give up and then head to the surface, while Boyd still hung on. With the help of the rest of the students, they would lift these beautiful creatures on to the boat, study, tag, and then release them back into the ocean.

So, they think Boyd had a shallow water blackout in the last 15ft before the surface. He was wearing a weightbelt, so this would have counteracted him floating up as well. Sad accident, but he died doing something he loved. This happened while he was in the graduate program at the Univ. of Central Florida.
