Gas at $5/gallon in California!?

This is getting ridiculous!

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The American Automobile Association of California says some drivers are now paying $4 a gallon for regular unleaded gasoline.

Crude oil prices hit an all-time high Wednesday, above $98 a barrel and analysts say with worldwide oil demand rising -- it is still not clear just how high prices will go.

In Salinas, AAA recorded an average of $3.39 per gallon. Santa Cruz is at an average of $3.37 per gallon.

KSBW checked and found gas in Gorda, south of Big Sur, is even higher. Drivers there are paying $5 for gas.

Over the past two weeks gas has gone up 15 cents in California alone, according to AAA.

It's only going to get worse, too.

Pretty shitty when a gallon of gas costs as much as a Venti Caramel Latte from Starbucks.

Does the US buy oil from countries that us USD? Or does the government lose out on the exchange as well?

I mean, $1 won't get them as much oil as it did 2 years ago, right? Due to the lower value of the $?

If so, than the pump prices will go up and up and up so the government can recoup the losses on the exchange.

Oil is always sold in USD, we went to war in Iraq because Saddam tried to sell oil in Euro's. Regardless of what excuse the govt used. The real WMD was oil being sold in Euro's.

Iran is also now trying to sell oil in Euros.. Notice how now they are a serious threat again? It all started heating up with Iran again, back when they announced they planed to sell oil in Euro's.

The one thing that keeps the USD as the dominant world currency regardless of it's worth is the fact that oil can only be bought and sold in USD. The day that stops is when the dollar will actually be in trouble.

The govt chased after oil producers a few decades ago and wanted oil to be based on the dollar. Unfortunately this means that every time the dollar drops, OPEC and other oil producers raise the price (or, in reality, the markets do) - else they are losing serious money.

If oil is at $96, it costs the US $96 to buy that barrel - as opposed to earlier times, eg paying $60 for that barrel. So, sure, pump prices will be more, but still suprising to see $4 already.

Other countries can be different - if their currency is strong, they get a better deal and gain on currency exchange. In theory, the cost of fuel in eg the UK should be less because of the weak dollar, (tho there are other factors) - but fat chance of seeing that - oil refiners/distributors and tax collectors have rarely been known to cut their revenues

Just another reason to work from home. Pretty soon it'll be like it was in the days of gas rationing. I remember sitting in line with my dad at the pump for over an hour on our designated day to fill the tank. Crazyness

I'm at a point where I don't care anymore. I live in the city and drive as little as possible. If it takes $5/gallon gas to get us to look toward alternative fuels or build higher MPG cars, I'm all for it.

$5 is fucking cheap. It should be $7-$10, like in Europe.

Mine gets pretty good mileage all things considered. On a road trip I could hit 20+mpg if I kept at 72mph. My average (and that includes driving up and down mountain roads) is 16mpg. For the amount of crap I use to carry in it, it's well worth it.

I'm pretty sure I get worse mileage on my 4.0 V6 manual Wrangler with no Hemi

sorry, but thats typical "Joe Six Pack" thinking. you are going to pay more cause of recent FED actions to devalue your currency in order to save wallstreet crocks.
by the way, do you know what are the average margins in oil industry?
around 10% and half of other economy sectors have higher margins then oil industry. even goverment make on gas more then oil industry alone.
when it comes to oil, the higher prices the better, people have to learn efficiency and savings.

its a matter of time before some whacko shoots a gas station attendant because he cant afford to go to work to feed his babys. fucked up thing is the gas stations almost pay as much as they charge us. i paid 3.39 this morning for gas and i know the guy pretty well at my station, and he said that they bought their last truck in at 3.35 per gallon.

its not their fault, its the oil companies.

I get 34mpg. This will probably increase my per-month gas expense by another $20.00.

This is true, I get about 20 on the road and I do a lot faster than 72. Luckily I have lots of motorcycles for around town. I don't think I have gone further than 3 miles in my car for 2-3 months. Of course, I have not really been home much in that time period either.

It's pretty up in Gorda...been pricey as hell there for gas for ages...it's in the middle of no where and not much competition along that drive. Still, shitty to hear things keep getting worse. I'm glad we elected the pres with an energy policy! :/

I need to back off part of that statement as the country has not "officially" announced it yet - the country involved is Qatar - one of the countries that announced it was divesting itself of dollars a while back (which is really unusual since they are best buds with Bush - even set up and run the Al Jazeera news network for him)

Also - best I can tell Iran has already swapped over to the Euro and other currencies (yen etc) to avoid the financial sanctions trying to be put on them
