Fap 11-07-2007 07:29 PM

i dont know of any walmarts on long island..

Jace 11-07-2007 07:33 PM

not really a choice here, it is either that or drive 25 more miles to hit the target, in which case i will be using more gas and putting more money in the big oil pockets

so, my choices are:
1. support slave labor by shopping at walmart
2. support big oil by driving to target

hehe, FUCK!

I dont' actually care, fuck everything else in the world but me

Jace 11-07-2007 07:36 PM

good movie though for those actually interested

Walmart is BAD.

They offer very low prices but:

- Very low wages, and lots of people work there part-time.

- They are killing US manufacturing, and hire 10 year old kids to make t-shirts in Bangladesh.

- They cheat the US government out of taxes.

- They are a monopoly in many areas, anti-competition, anti-union.

- Such low prices encourage waste of natural resources.

It's evil trying to get the cheapest at any cost, and the most funny thing is that you don't save money, you have huge credit card bills and buy yourself a fucking cruise and drive a fucking SUV instead of paying off your debt.

WalMart grew as fast as US consumer debt.

WalMarters like u suck. I bet your children are all obese like you.

I'm talking about the in store employees that always complain they don't get full-time so they can't get benefits. No one forced them to work there, so why should I give a shit? You only get in life what you settle for...

Sure.. there is that element sadly and, generally Walmart has (and still does) have a detrimental effect on the US economy overall. It's a corp, much like other corps - corps are not "benefactors" by nature, but predators, and Walmart sure is not alone in this.

The flip side is, got a "Walmart Princess" next door and she knows much of above already and dumps millions into foundations annually for what can be described as "the public good".

You can never rely on any corp to act in the interests of everyone/country without having media ads and a PR campaign - they represent only their shareholders - but, individuals within corps will do that without the "credits".

If you shop at ANY big box retailer you're dealing with the same thing.
You think Sears and Target pay union wages and benefits to their employees? You think they're not buying shit from China?

Wal-Mart gets all the bad press because they're the biggest, but they're no different than any other major company in the retail sector.

Unless you only buy things from local mom and pop stores and local farmers, you're in some way contributing to the exploitation of other human beings.
Welcome to capitalism.

my best friends girlfriend works at walmart, she gets benefits, stock options, and makes much more than min wage.

one of my highschool friends started out at walmart just after graduating and now moved up to manager and is making a hella good living, good enough to drive all the way to my house once a week (4 hours away), to hang out and goto a few bars...

If you really think that you are mistaken. Try to compare Wal Mart with say Costco. So please do not lump the big box retailers together. Costco does a great job at giving employee's high wages, benefits, paid vacations, upward movement in the company and much more while remaining highly profitable.

I would never go a Walmart in So Cal. Totally different crowd than what you get in Indiana.

96ukssob 11-07-2007 10:57 PM

if they had a walmart super center here (in socal) open 24/7 i sure as hell would be there very often. i dont go to walmart really to shop, but to check things out and see if there is anything i really need to buy at 4am. like paint balls, sling shots, vcr's, etc.

Actually this isn't true and it's just being used by the communities that don't want Wally world in their town and I caught a show on CNBC or Somewhere where they debunked this myth.

The fact is small stores around Walmart are doing better then ever because they provide better service and you can park within feet of the entrance and not have to walk a half mile to get what you want to buy.

I dont care about the people that work there. I care more about the country. Wal-Mart hires border jumpers and puts small companies out of business. Fuck them and thier little yellow price cutter guy too.

Lemons 11-08-2007 01:37 AM

I love WalMart!

Star 69 11-08-2007 05:55 AM

There are no Walmarts where I live.

LadyMischief 11-08-2007 06:05 AM

Why boycott Wal Mart? There are tons of companies we all do business with every day that are wasteful juggernauts of commercialism? WalMart is special this way? I dunno about everyone else, but when you have kids, someplace like walmart can be great for cheap clothes and simple things. Anyone who has kids knows that clothes are often the collateral damage when children get adventurous, and personally, I'm not into spending four times the amount replacing the clothes simply because people say Walmart is "bad". If people are gonna make a stand, it should be universal, not just pointing the finger at ONE company.

I think they're called Fresh and Easy or something. There is one about a mile away and another about 4 miles away. The farther one is actually being retrofitted in a former Walgreen pharmacy.

Yes that makes more sense, for them to take on Walmart 1 on 1 seems stupid.

scottybuzz 11-08-2007 06:12 AM

It is either lassiez-fare or communism, take your pick.

well there are medians, but they are the main ones.

Man, I've watched about 3 documentaries and read a couple of books on this very subject, I didn't just pull my last statement out of my ass.

You can't compare Costco to Wal-Mart. That's like comparing Kroger to 7-11.

cool1 11-08-2007 07:25 AM

Yes I shop at Walmart.
Can't beat the price, I could shop at a number of other stores but why should I pay more for the same item.

Cyrano 11-08-2007 07:38 AM

If I'm in the mood for crappy products of China, yes.

By their choice, so what's the problem?

- They are killing US manufacturing, and hire 10 year old kids to make t-shirts in Bangladesh.

They streamlined the supply chain line by being very efficient. That's capitalism for you. Oh, and about those 10 year old kids working in shops for pennies on the dollar? Guess what jobs they were doing before that? You can google for it... trust me -- it wasn't pretty, so this is a step up for them and they welcome it. There's no comparison at all when looking at Bangladesh and the USA, in terms of standard of living, so don't even go there.

- They cheat the US government out of taxes.

Who wouldn't? I remember some high profile companies who's CFO/CEOs went to jail recently for the same thing. All public companies report to shareholders, who demand profits. Funny thing is, your neighbour might be holding stock in Wal-Mart and enabling this very problem.

- They are a monopoly in many areas, anti-competition, anti-union.

They aren't a monopoly, thats just the brainwashed masses getting to you. They aren't anti-competitive, they are just very good at what they do, and they got a marketing engine that works wonders. Ever see your mom and pop store do all their pricing ending in 1 or 7? That alone was brilliant. Anti-union - hell yes! Soon as a union gets in there, wages go through the roof, litigation, terminations take forever or never - LOAs go up, HR costs go through the roof - say goodbye to being price competitive - period.

- Such low prices encourage waste of natural resources.

And that's human nature - in capitalism it's sell sell sell - which means, once you've got everything you need, we gotta re-invent the wheel and sell you crap you don't need, but have to throw away... its wasteful, but it keeps the sales engine rolling.

Anyways.... time to go make some more galleries. Have a good day, and i'm kinda overweight and I love shopping at Wal-Mart. :thumbsup

Kimo 11-08-2007 09:34 AM

i try to avoid walmart as much as possible, i was able to stay out totally for over a year but had to make an acception a few months ago :(
