So i'm thinking of moving to Australia...

Well I'm thinking of moving to australia, one thing that is sure is that i'll go there next july to finish the last year in college...since there are a couple of australians here i thought i'd ask some questions...im still not sure where to study, which city is considered to be the "best" or most livable?

is the porn industry in australia big or is it like in sweden almost non existent because of femenists? plus...
what kind of immigration policy does australia have...i know you guys have problems with refugees...but if i would get a job would i be able to apply for a "green card" and is it easy to get one?

I say go to Sydney.

Check out the University of New South Wales in Sydney. -----> www.unsw.edu.au

Immigration is very tough. If you want to stay in Australia after your school is over you will likely need to get a company to sponsor you so you can get permanent residence status (green card).

Read about it here -----> www.immi.gov.au

All initial student visas granted do not provide for the holder to be granted permission to work in Australia. Students and their dependants will only be able to apply for a student visa with work rights after they arrive in Australia and the student has commenced their course of study.

Generally, students and their dependents are limited to 20 hours work per week while the student's course of study or training is in session. Students may work full-time during holiday periods.

I've been thinking about moving there as well.

My thinking is that since I'll maintain my US accounts (via wires) and I run my own business there, I should be able to skirt under the radar (since I won't have to have any government sponsored work papers). I think I'll just have to leave the country every three months or so, no?

internet access sucks in australia. so before you go, download everything you'll want in the states and haul it there on some massive hard drives. it'll cost you less in the long run. ;)

Yep, although you might have trouble coming back in too many times. But 3 months is the longest stay.

Correct, cant host it here, cant even rent an X rated video in most states.

Not that you could afford to host it here anyway - bandwidth is a good 50-100 times more expensive here than in the states.

Brisbane's a nice relaxed town with just about everything you could want. Its not as big as Sydney or Melbourne but is a lot more affordable and you cant beat the weather.

If you are into beaches and shit both the coasts to the north and south are about 45mins to an hour drive away and are probable some of the best in the world.

So Sydney and Melbourne if you want big city/cosmopolitian lifestyle or Brisbane for the good life.

Telstra broadband cable download is pretty damn fast... downloading from a decent server in the states is not a problem.

ADSL in Australia sucks.... got it at work and its a pain in the ass.

You cannot legally host porn that would get an 'R' rating (insertion etc) in Australia.

The Australian Broadcasting Authority regulates the industry, and only acts upon a complaint recieved. Usually this action is to request that the material be taken down. Im not aware of any cases where someone has been prosecuted for hosting porn in australia.

If you host offshore then you are still legally responsible and can be prosecuted as the offence of you uploading to a server occured in Australia.

You definatley cant host X rated material in Australia - not sure on R but I dont think so. Problem is it needs to be classified officially to be sure.

There is also the issue of stuff that would be RC (Refused Classification) in Australia - things like fisting, I am guessing WS, stories are an issue unlike in the US - you dont have free rain.

I walk a fine line on producing stuff in Aus. The actual production is not the issue - there are no laws stopping it and prostitution is legal so they cant try and get you on that. The problem is I cant sell or deliver (give - no money involved) to someone else in Australia. I could get my work classified but that costs and takes too long and you have to be in one of two states for that to work. I get around it by giving it to myself by uploading it to servers in the US - once there I can do what I want with it.

So the laws are very funny here. And the laws arent even just about X or R, you cant legally sell a cartoon or kids movie here if it hasnt been classified.

You can't legally host it here, but you just get a host in the US and upload your stuff to your server there. No probs.

And quite a few of the BIG sponsors are based here in Australia.

I am not sure that is correct. There was NSW legislation that would have made this the case but my understanding is although it was approved in parliment it hasnt been enacted yet.

As an Australian company or person though - you dont want to be distributing stuff back to Australians no matter where it is hosted as that would be illegal.

I live in Queensland and we are involved in many aspects of the biz.

Some of the biggest players in the porn biz, live or operate out of Australia.

Most of the big operators in the biz are based in Melbourne or Brisbane.

Australia is a very diverse place geographically and culturally so you shld be able to find somewhere you like here.

Our Universities have a great reputation internationally. It depends on what you want to study.

You can checkout the following Universities online: Macquarie University (Sydney, NSW), Deacon University (Canbera, A.C.T.), Monash University (Victoria), Swinburne University of Technology (Victoria), Bond University (Brisbane, Qld), University of Technology (Brisbane, Qld), Griffith University Qld)

http://www.dest.gov.au/highered/ausunis.htm is a list of all the higher education institutions in Australia with links to each of their websites.

If you wld like to know more about the biz or Australia in general
hit me up on icq 158328214.

It surprises me about the hosting, since many adult companies operate in australia as firehorse said. Some of them do the billing for adult sites in Australia, there are content providers etc....what's wrong with hosting?

Hosting/Internet is dealt with by the same body that regulates our TV and follows the same standards. So you cant host X in Australia at all, and in that link Bawdy just posted, R is illegal also unless protected by age verification.

All the adult businesses in Aus I know of host in the US. Apart from the laws, it is really way to expensive to host - bandwidth is about US$75 a gb here from our major web hosts.

As a content provider, it is difficult as I technically cant mail someone a CD of the content. I really need to get it out of Aus and then deal with it, but as I said before, producing it is legal (in the states I shoot in atleast) - its just what you do with it after that you have to be careful about.

I would think that it would be really unlikely that you would get busted by the Aussie authorites for sending a customer a content CD.

How do companies like www.adultshop.com get away with selling porn DVDs in Australia?

They do it from Canberra.

It is legal there if you are licensed. Every state is different.

And whilst I doubt I would get busted randomly - it only takes a pissed off boyfriend to winge to the cops for them to start taking a little to much interest in what I am doing.

I have just spent a fortune getting up to date legal opinions just to make sure.

If they did want to make an issue out of me sending a cd, the sentance can carry goal (jail) time which I would rather avoid.

Here are the main points

1) Go to Brisbane - great weather, great beaches, great webmaster community

2) The Australian Dollar is so low, you double your income by living here

3) Who cares about Australian law, everything we do is off shore, so all those comments mean shit

4) Bandwidth - are you kidding! With the money you make in currency conversions, you can buy an ISP

5) Aussie chicks are hot!

5) Aussies dont wrestle crocodiles and ride kangaroos to work

6) Surfers Paradise is only 40 Minutes from Brisbane http://www.goldcoastregion.com/photo_gallery_all.html

7) Sydney is Beautiful, but too expensive and too big

8) Melbourne is great, if you like RAIN and COLD, but it does have the best restaurants and beautiful gardens

Have a geat weekend all

Now back to the Porn ;-)
Daniel

Australian Cable is pissweak compared to cable in the states though. That must be said. I live in Brisbane too, and i'm on Telstra's 3 gig plan.

Oh yes, the cable here is capped at ridiculous limits. I think the highest plan is 10 gig a month, and that's somewhere in the vacinity of AU$200/month. Oh, and don't forget something like 13 cents per MEGABYTE for any excess!

And to top it off, the usage meter is innacurate, and they claim no responsibility if you follow it, assuming you have another 2 gig to spare, and in actual fact are 5 gig over the limit. Assholes! Bwahaha. I only did go over once though, by about 10 meg. Was still kinda worrying though, 'casue the fuckign meter said i was 500 meg under the limit!

Anyways, besides the crappy assed internet connections, Australia ain't so bad. I've been here for seven years now, and i've enjoyed it.

I grew up in Perth. Not a bad city - population a bit over 1 million - great beaches both in Perth and the rest of the state - I think they are the best in Australia.

The weather is great - hot in summer but no humidity, not too cold in Winter.

Its a lot more violent these days than when I lived there, more vandalism/grafitti but I guess not too bad.

The down side - it is the most isolated city in the world. You are hours of flight time from anywhere else in the country and it is generally cheaper to fly into Asia than across to Sydney or Melbourne.

Would I ever move back - not a hope. Its isolation combined with a lack of "culture" for want of a better phrase makes it a bit too boring for my likes. Its very suburban throughout the whole city.

The only problem with Perth is it's location. It's on the west coast, and it's pretty much the only major city in all of Western Australia.

In brisbane for example, the Gold Coast or Surfer's Paradise are only about 1 or 2 hours drive away. I've never been to Perth myself though, so i can't really comment on it.

i was just looking Perth up on LonelyPlanet.com and read about the dangers of driving at night outside of the city proper because of the liklihood of hitting kangaroos and remembered my friend telling me everyone has a special bumper on the front of their car to help absorb the punishment to the car from hitting one. It's just a normal bumper bar as far as i can tell. They call them 'Roo bars over here though.

-University of South Australia (Adelaide)
-Macquarie University (Sydney)

The Griffith Nathan Campus (brisbane) is pretty nice. My brother went there for a short while, until he changed courses. Their facilities seem pretty good. What are you studying? Might give us a better idea..

I think Norway just pipped Australia for the highest standard of living in the world last year ( this takes into consideration such factors as access to child care, education, lifestyle ( weather/beaches/food/entertainment ) etc etc and not just money and access to nuclear weapons), so you might want to swim across that pond that separates your two countries ;)

Seriously, there are many choices in Australia. You should come out as a visitor first. I've met many Swedish backpackers ( of the female variety ) out here, and they love the country. I hear Aussie girls love Swedish guys. I live in Sydney. It is a beautiful city with many fantastic features, however it is now one of the most expensive cities in the world to live. I'm thinking of a life style change and buying a farm ( about 600 ha ) north of Sydney - I can be on cable there, so I wouldn't worry about cable access.

Well, i've heard good things about both Bond and Griffith in terms of their business courses. Apparently, Griffith does quite well in marketing as well.
