metallica - lost talent???

what the fuck has happened. i've played guitar for 8 years and i've grown up learning a lot of their earlier stuff, they are my favorite band and prolly will always be my favorite band. but what the fuck, these past years they've turned into complete assholes and their music really fucking sucks. its like their musical ability has regressed and they're starting from step 1, except producing fucking new-metal shit. if you people haven't heard "We Did It Again" with JA RULE, you should, because you'll get a really good laugh at how horrible it sounds. not only does their new music suck, but musically its really simple music - anyone could play it - where as their earlier albums sounded awesome and were rather complex? what has happened? what is the reasoning for this? money? head over to www.metallica.com and check out the video on their main page, it gives a tiny clip of some of their new music and it as well, sounds stupid as shit. i think its ok to assume that they aren't making this new music because they LIKE it... perhaps they're just going with whatever sells the best at the current times.. and sadly enough this new-metal shit really doesn't have any depth at all and most of the bands have no talent. oh well, musical taste is obviously relative. just my opinion. damn, i'd love if they were to make a CD like their earlier ones... like master of puppets / black album. ideas as to why these bastards have changed so much??

I think they changed so they could get play on MTV. When they came out with that "Enter Sandman" shit... they sold their souls. (to pop culture)

Fletch, but you have to agree that the black album had some very good songs on it, perhaps it wasn't exactly satisfying to the tastes of their "original" fans, but none the less, the songs were really put together well and had a lot of dynamics within. either way, basically all earlier metallica fans are losing out with their new shit.

No.

Hetfield going to singing lessons and trying to learn how to correctly structure a song is not talent.

And no matter what that album was their most "PRODUCED" album, meaning some engineer made that album not that band. Background dynamics and effects etc even most of the time some song structure arwe due to engineers man, not the band.

I work in studios with bands and I know what the bands produce, and then I know what we do behind the band to make them better.

The black album is total shit. My fav is Master of Puppets. I used to have a jacket with a huge iron on thing with the Master of Puppets album cover on it. Ahh, the days

Yup, Master was the pinnacle for Metallica...while the Black alubm wasn't horrible, it was basically their jump the shark moment...I grew up with the crunching guitars, complex song structures, long, drawn out songs and uniqueness of the music and their "we don't give a fuck" attitude...I have to wonder how many times Cliff Burton has spun in his grave.......speaking of which, the anniversary of his death is soon appraoching...time to break out Master and Kill 'em All and endlessly loop "Orion" and "Anesthesia".......

Exactly.

Can we draw a timeline of the bands fall of comrades which also starts to show how silly Lars/james/Kurt can be.

Without Mustaine what happened?

Without Burton what happened?

Without Newstead what happened?

hahahaha

It's called "mainstream"
It's killed the music. Nothing will ever be like it used to be even a few years ago. Im a huge fan of post seattle grung...Nirvana, pearl Jam, soundgarden. You'll never here the likes of that again.
Except we have Chris Cornell coming out with one album with Rage Against The Machine later this month. But even that will sound a bit mainstream. Ah how i hate todays music.

I wouldn't excatly sat that everything after ....and justice for all is crap. We say that becuase we were raised on "motorbreath", "whiplash" and "trapped under ice" Ride the lightning, Master, and and justice for all by far their greatest albums. But just think how long they have playing that shit over and over again. So, what did they do, they changed it up, cut their hair, and all their "fans" freaked. They stlye change was no different than any other band such as the beatles, or zepplin, or even Ozzy when they strayed from what got them there, and got a little creative.

Some of the black album, such as "through the never" and "holier than thou" were very much in the old metallica sound. Then came unload and load and everyone ripped them a new ass for "selling out"...screw that. In fact during the load tour they played all of "garage days"(the old one) straight through... and our encore was Master of puppets.

We all miss the days of Sanitarium and my personal favorite "disposable heroes" but its still the same metallica minus newstead (for now) They have been around for 23 years....that is something any band that has been launched since 1990 would love to say about themselves.

So enough of the see-out crap......

I remember a loooooong time ago when Metallica was talking about how they'd never sell out, make music videos or put their images on any kind of merchandise other than T-Shirts.

Less than a year later I saw fucking Metallica lunchboxes, pillow cases and goddamn Metallica BINDERS for chrissakes!!!

I think it was pretty much downhill from there.

Thank You.

yup

maybe I'm just a nostalgic old fool, but I loved the old days of tape trading and hearing new shit that wasn't getting played on MTV or the radio every ten minutes (or many tmes not at all). What I find funny is these new "hip" stations with thir "Metallica Memories" or whatever and they play shit that they wouldn't have dared play when it actually came out (Xtreme Radio here actually plays "Fade To Black" regularly and that song couldn't get any radio play at all when it first came out...except very obsure radio stations in the bigger markets...I grew up in Wyoming with nothing but country and western and whatever was playing on MTV....so, in tape trading, I found new bands and sounds that I wouldn't have otherwise been exposed to....and I also turned my friends on to new shit...stuff like Slayer, Venom, Celtic Frost, King Diamond/Mercyful fate, etc. Ah, the days of mix tapes with shitty sound and bad fade parts...there was something special about those, same as my dad with his vinyl collection...

the thing that bugs me about the later Metallica stuff is that it seems too polished and loses that raw edge...my favorite video to pop into the vcr is the Cliff 'em All home vid...shit production (on purpose) but it had charm and it was pure...

imagine if someone mixed 75% oregano or basil in with your pot...that's what happened to Metallica for me...it might give it a better flavor and/or smell, but it's just not the same buzz......

hard for me to pick my favorite song as it changes with my moods, but always love a listen to "Orion" (greatest instrumental of all time), "Damage, Inc.", "Motorbreath", "Fade To Black" (my favorite ballad) and "Whiplash"...but also enjoy their punk covers on Garage Days...

Not sure if any of you have heard the phrase "Jumped the shark". It refers to when something starts turning to shit , it was coined after when "The Fonz" jumped the shark on happy days. From that point forward Happy Days went to shit.

Anyhow, my point is that Metallica "Jumped the Shark" when they were on the MTV music awards around the Justice for All time. I think they played "One" on the show and ever since then their albums have been soft and more mainstream. I think part of it is they are just getting older and mellowing out, they do not have that pissed off at the world attitude anymore, I think it's kind of hard to maintain that attitude when you are a millionaire playing tennis all day, but there are other bands out there just as good as old metallica. Personally my favorites are Hatebreed & System of a down.

Another good example of this is that Dave Mustain the original guitarist for Metallica is more into politics then making music.

Metallica has only made one really good album (And Justice For All... 1988) since Cliff Burton tragically died in Sweden 1986

They are still talented, just heading in a new direction, probably not the best one for old school fans, but, I can appericate it for the period that they are in.

Live shows still thunder like no other

Guess you havent seen AC/DC live, or Motorhead.

That is Thunder.

Hetfield singing Bob Seger covers over Coors draft isnt thunder. Kidding, I have seen Metallica live quite a few times. 8 I think.

hehehe

Although I did see metallica 3 days back to back in New orleans on a tour with Faith No more and Guns N Roses shit back in ... fuck I cant even remember, whenever those fucks would have toured together, early 90's

Amp.... this is just a GFY messageboard from which i posted a measily lil thread on what other FANS thought about their current music. its not like this is some life changing event from which i dwell on constantly. its just chat from fans, its curiosity, opinions - topics like these are bound to happen, and theres nothing wrong with it. the idea spontaneously came to me through random thought and i thought i'd post about it, and thats it!

Faith No More is also an interesting hypocrisy, although in a completely different sense. When Patton quit the Faith No More thing and was getting serious about Mr. Bungle (back when they were all playing in masks), he'd get into fights with the faith no more fans for showing up and requesting FNM songs. At one show he was so pissed off about this that he amplified feedback at the audience (at an ear damaging level) for two hours.

a few years later and he was touring with faith no more again. wtf. fucking psychopath.
