Actually my mom used to beat the everlasting bullshit out of me. I know what it's like to be beaten, that's why I don't condone it at all. This is just me. But hey when I watch my friends kids I don't hit them. I talk to them. Not yelling but firm talks. Kids don't always have to be hit.

i've only been spanked once in my life... and i was also never "grounded" or anything like that. i believe for the overwhelming majority of kids, physical contact is not needed if proper parenting is used from the start. yes, what is proper parenting, well it varies from kid to kid, everyones different... its natural to assume the way in which you teach a kid is through telling them they do WRONG and disciplining them through some sort of physical means so they won't do it again... but the physical discipline part is really not necessary... smart thought and words can always be more powerful than the physical punch. now i could see where a lot of you will say what the fuck ya don't have kids and ya don't know what you're talking about... true i don't have kids but i was once one myself, and i'm around them all day. seriously, try and take the psychological thought challenging approach... anyone knows the brain can be much more powerful than the fist. its just a matter of truly figuring out the kid. just my opinion.

But, those that say physical punishment of any kind is never okay.. Well, you're idiots. That's why you have all the little monsters running around these days, that don't respect anyone and exist solely to cause trouble.

Yes, I have a son. He's almost 2. So he's extremely curious, and at the age where he KNOWS he's doing something wrong. For normal things like making a mess, etc. Just a saying no and then if it continues giving him a "time out" on the chair for a couple minutes works fine.

But. For things he does that are dangerous to his health and well-being (i.e. playing with an electrical socket) he gets told no, and if it continues immediately after that, he gets his hand slapped and then sat down in a time out.

Surprise. The small amount of physical punishment is like night and day vs. just the "time out" and talking to. Rarely do you see him going back to the dangerous behavior in the same day or so. Kids his age do have very short memories though, so one in a while a reminder might be necessary.

I don't think I'll ever go all-out and spank him when he gets older, as he's a fairly well behaved kid. But if I had a little terror that hurt people and didn't listen, I sure wouldn't leave it out of consideration if all else failed.

I was spanked as a kid, probably too severely so I'm not going to make the same mistake. But, I turned out fine, and as a kid and teenager actually respected people.

All that said, physical punishment of any kind out of anger is a VERY large "no". Period.

You're mostly correct.

I think the absolute cardinal rule of punishment and raising kids is: Consistency.

If he gets punished, follow-through. If he's doing something wrong, and you say no "or else", follow the hell through.

My ex-gf has a little brother who's 10 now. He is an absolute little fucking shit. It's all I can do when forced to babysit him to keep from throwing him against a wall and teaching him some respect.

If he doesn't get what he wants, when he wants, he'll purposefully hurt people by hitting/throwing stuff/etc. When my son was a newborn he'd throw books and such at him w/o anything done other than yelling by his parents.

He knows he can get away with anything, because even if he IS punished he'll get away with 1/20th of what was promised. Being grounded to your room for a week turns into a couple hours, etc. When babysitting, it makes it impossible for ANYONE to watch him. You can't punish him, because he'll just make shit up and tell his mommy when she gets home, and she'll take his side. He knows that as well.

All I know, is that I respected my babysitters like they were god. I knew that if I misbehaved there would be severe hell to pay when my parents got home, the punishments were always about 5 times as bad.

It's all about taking firm, but lenient when possible control early on I think. Let the child explore and learn the limits, but don't let those limits be overly strict so they impair normal development. Then stick with them, and be firm when he's crying about how he'll never do it again. Sticking through 2 large punishments and maintaining your ground for a serious offense will in the end be a lot easier than half-assing 50 punishments for the same offense, and another 500 for others since he knows he can get away with shit w/o reprocussions.

So yes, in almost all cases if you stick to your guns early and use some thought, I agree there is rarely a case for physical punishment being needed. There WILL be exceptions though, as every kid will do something absolutely terrible (i.e. life threatening) and you need to make absolute certain he knows that it is NEVER to happen again. I have no problem letting fear work towards the parents advantage in that case.

galleryseek Confirmed User Industry Role: Join Date: Mar 2002 Posts: 8,234	i've only been spanked once in my life... and i was also never "grounded" or anything like that. i believe for the overwhelming majority of kids, physical contact is not needed if proper parenting is used from the start. yes, what is proper parenting, well it varies from kid to kid, everyones different... its natural to assume the way in which you teach a kid is through telling them they do WRONG and disciplining them through some sort of physical means so they won't do it again... but the physical discipline part is really not necessary... smart thought and words can always be more powerful than the physical punch. now i could see where a lot of you will say what the fuck ya don't have kids and ya don't know what you're talking about... true i don't have kids but i was once one myself, and i'm around them all day. seriously, try and take the psychological thought challenging approach... anyone knows the brain can be much more powerful than the fist. its just a matter of truly figuring out the kid. just my opinion.

By child I mean under the age that can kick my ass of course. Were my son to be 17 and thinking he could get away with doing something just because he was "grown" there may be times I might lay the smack down. Never a fistfight though. But, those that say physical punishment of any kind is never okay.. Well, you're idiots. That's why you have all the little monsters running around these days, that don't respect anyone and exist solely to cause trouble. Yes, I have a son. He's almost 2. So he's extremely curious, and at the age where he KNOWS he's doing something wrong. For normal things like making a mess, etc. Just a saying no and then if it continues giving him a "time out" on the chair for a couple minutes works fine. But. For things he does that are dangerous to his health and well-being (i.e. playing with an electrical socket) he gets told no, and if it continues immediately after that, he gets his hand slapped and then sat down in a time out. Surprise. The small amount of physical punishment is like night and day vs. just the "time out" and talking to. Rarely do you see him going back to the dangerous behavior in the same day or so. Kids his age do have very short memories though, so one in a while a reminder might be necessary. I don't think I'll ever go all-out and spank him when he gets older, as he's a fairly well behaved kid. But if I had a little terror that hurt people and didn't listen, I sure wouldn't leave it out of consideration if all else failed. I was spanked as a kid, probably too severely so I'm not going to make the same mistake. But, I turned out fine, and as a kid and teenager actually respected people. All that said, physical punishment of any kind out of anger is a VERY large "no". Period. -Phil

If he gets punished, follow-through. If he's doing something wrong, and you say no "or else", follow the hell through. My ex-gf has a little brother who's 10 now. He is an absolute little fucking shit. It's all I can do when forced to babysit him to keep from throwing him against a wall and teaching him some respect. If he doesn't get what he wants, when he wants, he'll purposefully hurt people by hitting/throwing stuff/etc. When my son was a newborn he'd throw books and such at him w/o anything done other than yelling by his parents. He knows he can get away with anything, because even if he IS punished he'll get away with 1/20th of what was promised. Being grounded to your room for a week turns into a couple hours, etc. When babysitting, it makes it impossible for ANYONE to watch him. You can't punish him, because he'll just make shit up and tell his mommy when she gets home, and she'll take his side. He knows that as well. All I know, is that I respected my babysitters like they were god. I knew that if I misbehaved there would be severe hell to pay when my parents got home, the punishments were always about 5 times as bad. It's all about taking firm, but lenient when possible control early on I think. Let the child explore and learn the limits, but don't let those limits be overly strict so they impair normal development. Then stick with them, and be firm when he's crying about how he'll never do it again. Sticking through 2 large punishments and maintaining your ground for a serious offense will in the end be a lot easier than half-assing 50 punishments for the same offense, and another 500 for others since he knows he can get away with shit w/o reprocussions. So yes, in almost all cases if you stick to your guns early and use some thought, I agree there is rarely a case for physical punishment being needed. There WILL be exceptions though, as every kid will do something absolutely terrible (i.e. life threatening) and you need to make absolute certain he knows that it is NEVER to happen again. I have no problem letting fear work towards the parents advantage in that case. -Phil

I'm 40 now. He died 17 years ago. When he died we were best friends. I always repected him and loved him as a DAD. But it was different times. And he was OLD SCHOOL and it was when i was older than 4. My kids are 11 and 8 and I don't hit them. Iv'e given a few hard grabs and maybe slapped their butts once or twice but never VIOLENTLY. And afterwards I knew I was wrong, appologized, explained myself and felt horrible even knowing my parents used to do 10 times worse. Watching that lady was SICK. HE HASNT touched a kid yet knock on wood. BUT I told him I would whip his ass if someone started to kick his ass and he didnt start it. SCREW THAT my kids will not be a punching bag if somone hits them screw running to a teacher or anyone else fight back. I dont condoen fighting at all but I don't want to rasie little sissies either.
