I got one, it goes off every 18 minutes, mmm, smells good, it's from airwick
hm I think we are talking about something else
An air purifier is a device which removes contaminants from air. Air purifies are commonly marketed as being particularly beneficial to allergy sufferers and asthmatics and at reducing second-hand tobacco smoke.
Dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores, dust mite feces can act as allergens, triggering allergies in sensitive people. Smoke particles and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can pose a risk to health. Air purifiers are used to reduce the concentration of these airborne contaminants and are especially useful for people who suffer from allergies and asthma. They also reduce the need for frequent household cleaning.
I have had a hepa filter in my bedroom for the past 10 years. I'm on my third model. This one is a honywell rated for a room that is about 4X the size of my bedroom. You are supposed to get one that can change all the air in the room at least 6 times per hour. By getting one that is significantly oversized I can keep it on low which is very quiet and still maintain the 6X/hour number.
I got a few sharp plasmaclusters.. they work wonders

I'm wondering... the idea behind these sounds great, but do these eventually lead to the weakening of our immune system's? Similar to what can happen when you excessively wash your hands.

Don't have one yet, but one is on my housewares list to be purchased in the near future (assuming I don't somehow get one for Christmas or my soon-after birthday).
Did you know that over 80% of the dust in your house is shed human skin-cells?

Doubt it, unless maybe they became the rule of every indoor environment everywhere.... and everyone lived indoors all the time. You're still getting a healthy dose of whatever's to be had biologically every time you step outside or talk to someone face-to-face.
In just your home, I think a filter would only help respiratory health and (in the case of children) respiratory development... and cut back on the amount of dusting you need to do.
its not really overkill, i have allergies and it does wonders. plus i have a big house so i let it run and then move it to another part of the house for a while and have to keep rotating it.
Actually, it works great... to well in fact. Since it also has an ionizer in it it tends to create to much ozone. Not a big deal to most people, but both my wife and I get headaches from too much. So, we have to turn it off once in awhile. Had the same issue with all the sharper image products. As an air cleaner, it's really the single best you can buy, plus there are options for moving old air out of the house and replacing it with fresh air etc... Mind you this is not a cheap way to go... but if you suffer from allergies then its the only real option for taking care of your entire house.

yes I suffer from allergies, I wonder how effcient my 7 year old model is. Probably sucks compared to what's today on the market.
with ionizers, you are right, also wikipedia says:
Air ionizers and ozone
As with all health-related appliances, there is some controversy surrounding the claims of certain companies, specifically involving ionic air purifiers. Particularly, some ionic air purifiers generate the pollutants ozone (an energetic allotrope of oxygen) and NOx. Either can be toxic in sufficient concentrations. Ironically, people who have asthma and allergy are most prone to the adverse effects. For example, increasing ozone concentration can increase the risk of asthma attacks. Due to the below average performance and potential health risks, Consumer Reports have advised against using ionizers.
In September, 2007, the California Air Resources Board announced a ban of in-home ozone purifiers. This law, which will take effect in 2009, will require testing and certification of all types of air purifiers for ozone emissions
No one in my house has allegeries *yet* so I really wanted something to clean the air from cooking. I'm weary of ozone & cancer dangers, so I dont want one of those. I had a salesman tell me that they have air cleaners that use UV rays to destroy food odors... The cost is $1600 for 2. Each air handler needs one.
