But carry on fellow gfyers... carry on

Most everything written about the ancient greeks is based on a few texts that survived the dark ages, burning of library at Alexandria, etc., so you are saying Russians have source material to work with that is different than those I have mentioned? That definitely would be news to me. What ancient texts and archeological record that survived the ages are they privy to that the rest of the world is missing out on? You could say that is true of the perception of Philip and Alexander and the Macedonian's exploits but only so much survives from a hundred to five hundred to a few thousand years preceeding that... Herodatus and Thucydides are not called "fathers of history" for nothing... :2 cents:

(yes I do realize the absurdity of a historical debate on gfy... that is what makes it so fun...)

But it was historical:

It was obviously embellished for the movie but the basis for the story is true.

Yes, no one here is denying that.

Aside from that though... the embellishment was pretty darn heavy...

(another historical note of fact... the spartan hoplites were heavily armored and not running around bare chested with abs flexing and glutes clenching...that embellishment of course is due to the gay hollywood mafia :winkwink:)

You mean the Yummy Mafia. Whoever they are, they have great taste.

I think 300 is the first time I EVER saw a movie that presented men in a fashioni that women have been presented in the media for decades. And here I am, not feeling horrible at all that I completely delighted in it. ;)

RevengeBucks_Monica 11-05-2007 10:49 PM

oh yeah, and this thread is useless without more pics ;)

lol, then I am figuring that the movie "topgun" must have been before your time...

and I don't want to sound like a fag or nothing but I thought "300" was pretty darn cool too... at least it paid some serious respect to the comic book which it was drawn from...

Perhaps but for all the right reasons... spartan women were considered quite immodest because it was fashionable for them to be topless whereas other city states were seriously peevish about women exposing themselves publicly. At the same time though they were envied as being physically beautiful from being athletic. Also... even though spartan society was a male military society spartan women enjoyed many more rights and privileges and freedoms than the ordinary hellenic female. And they were encouraged to have plenty of spartan babies...:winkwink:

Far-L most of my studies are done via own research so alas I may be off.
Didnt spartan women pretty much choose the males, by either submission to them or fighting them off (yeah sounded a bit rape fantasy to me)?
Wasnt child birth really for the country/state and not really for personal reasons?
Did they not perform very selective breeding, weeding out even the weekest of babies by leaving them alone for a few days?

Now opinion time, who was the more impressive general and why?

250 spartans short. errr 50!

You have definitely done your homework. Even if it was for the state it was still reverence for fucking when you get right down to it. In a comparison of which generals?

Theo 11-06-2007 02:21 AM

the whole greek gay community tries to find evidence to prove what some of you posted yet they have failed miserable. The historical references to homosexual activities are minimal, not saying they don't exist.

I've been reading BBC news on daily basis for the last few years. If I apply the same criteria they are applied in ancient Greece by some I must draw the conlcusion that the vast majority of british people are either pedophiles or rapists lol

Theo 11-06-2007 02:25 AM

and bottom line because I happen to be greek. Personally I don't care if everyone in ancient greece was homosexual. I'm not getting offended, being a very liberal person is last thing that worries me. It's annoying though to see the gay community in order to strengthen their rights to manipulate history.

Leonidas and Themistokles would be the generals.
Not sure if the Tegea's, Mantinea's, Corinth's, Philus's, Mycenaeans, Thespians, or Arcadian's had generals represented.

Well in that case I would have to go with Themosticles - also known as the father of the Athenian navy and a tactical genius. He was the real brains behind the win at Salamis (which made the victory at Plataea possible) and was a chief architect of the Athenian expansion. He might not have gone done in history as being as brave and loyal and tough as Leonidas but he certainly would be my pick to lead not only in the fight but also in the peace... Thucydides certainly had only the highest praise for him - saying he represented the best of Athens.
