Serpant is a psychological horror, sort of like jaccobs ladder.

Yet the classics and the homage is misssing.
night of the living dead - bw
last house on the left
nightmare on elm street - 1st.
friday 13th 1st - pre jason

Then one must hommage to Bruce Campbell and the Raimi's, Sam & Ivan.

Last House on the Left freaked me out too much, and I just couldn't take the awful, awful soundtrack.
I don't go for the brainless blood and guts slashers like Freddie, Jason, etc.

A few of my favourite camp/B movies:
Kingdom of the Spiders
Hellraiser
Candyman 1 & 2

And how could I forget Poltergeist and Pet Semetary??

The Ninja Scrolls isn't horror, but it's got supernatural demons and demon fighting in it...

I am a HUGE Silent Hill fan, so I quite enjoyed the movie. The Resident Evil movies were surprisingly good! I would rate them as comparable with Underworld.

Hehe on last house.
Ok how can you diss brainless blood and guts (nightmare 1 and friday 1) which have less blood and gore than nearly all the movies you just listed. Neither of those two are brainless either. Keep in mind nightmare 1 was very tame and more psychological (aside from one blood scene), and of course friday the 13th only shows jason as a kid at the very end, the mother is the killer and again very very little blood or gore, those two with halloween defined the rules of modern horror.

As to those leaving out bruce, sam, and ivan.... shame on you.

Yes I loved it! I watched Mouth of Madness right after reading a whole book of H.P. Lovecraft's stories, including the title one, so it was quite interesting to see how the movie was based on so many of his ideas.

There are some harder to find lovecraft adaptations and some not so hard to find ones (his mytho's is one of the most used ever). However most are low budget and or short films. He is one of my more favorite authors.

Me too!The Reanimator was just so disappointing I couldn't bring myself to watch the sequel. Dagon looks so lame, I haven't watched that one either.

I love his writing. It's so boring and dry compared to today, but it's a bit like watching black and white movies, knowing that they paved the way for colour movies. His ideas were just so creepy! Horror at Red Hook is a good one

I meant Lovecraft is dry in comparison to horror/suspense/sci-fi today. Just like some people have problems watching black and white movies, I've known people who have trouble getting past the writing style of older books. I happen to quite enjoy his stuff, though.

But but but any real horror fan will just miss so much in their favorite books, specially short story books. Every horror and many sci-fi authors borrows from him, his mythos, and or writes stories in his honor. He is sampled more than any 80's beat.

Pretty much any of them.

I especially like busting out the Tales from the Crypt and Creepshows -- they're filled with such cheesey goodness.

The Descent -- the best horror movie of the decade

A Tale of two Sisters (Korean) -- only because it has one of the single most creepy scenes in any movie I've seen.

The Ring (American version)

Silent Hill -- not the best movie, but beautiful cinematography and set design, and some really twisted imagery that might give some nightmares.

Don't Look Now -- the most fucked up ending ever.

Evil Dead 2

The Thing -- special effects still holds up well today

Session 9 -- "DO IT GORDON!" inside joke for those that have seen it.

Jacob's Ladder

Audition

Hard to go wrong with anything from David Cronenberg, specially videodrome and scanners. Sure some of you youngins may laugh at the effects. Davids stories are always very thought out and really touch a mental nerve.

Please also add the thing (one of the best remakes in film history)
