Canadians shopping in the US. Where are the best savings???
Thinking of making a trip down to the US and buy some things.. Looks like I can save (before taking into account the exchange rate), about $130 on a digital camera I'm looking at... but memory cards are almost the same.. Was looking at some LCD TVs and for the ones I was looking at, they were either close to be the same or were even more expensive in the US..
So what other items are good to buy for great savings? |

Gas is cheaper, so are food and clothes. No GST either!

I'm thinking of going down to shop. I need a decent new laptop so I'm gonna take a look, maybe spend some money in Vegas since it's all so cheap :D

Major appliances are much cheaper in the U.S. - according to the news last night between $200-300 cheaper on average.

what are the custom duties/taxes on various types of products? is there a handy list somewhere?
Canaidan retailers better get their shit together fast because the last time the US and Canadian dollar were at par was 20 years before the Internet - now people can sit on their asses and just search the Net looking for deals in the US and ordering them online.

I would poke around factory outlets, they have amazing deals.
I would probably avoid major cities.

It depends...
Some custom agents are lazy and just let you go thru if they figure it's more effort than it's worth.. if they do make us pay, then we'd have to pay the Taxes.. but we'd have to pay it even if we bought it up here... You can bring back $50 free if you're only there for 24 hours, $400 for 48 hours and then the next bump is for a week... with 48 hours you also get a flat 7% duty, but then depends on whether or not the items should be charged duty. |

If you're in BC like I am.. roll down to portland they have no tax at all.. if you stay for 2 days you can legally bring back like $1000 worth of crap (If you have 2 people), and 4 bottles of booze.
