business gurus: where do I start for research?

I'm looking to build a product to sell in Hawaii, but I don't know how to research to see how many similar products have sold there.

I want to know how much stores generally pay per unit, and how many they sell in a year.

Where do I start to research such info?

There are companies you pay to do this for you. They have vast survey data, demographical data, etc. If you find a good one, it's worth it.

Contact your local college, or the state should have a small business division that has data.

I tried that once in Hawaii also. I devised a long piece of wood and fiberglass that you could stand on and slide on water. I called it the Amazing Water Slider Board. Got to Hawaii and someone already did it. WTF kind of name is surf board?
