XP or VISTA (Core 2 Duo 3ghz, 4gb mem)?

I'm totally comfortable with XP but I'm thinking about upgrading to Vista...

I'm not a retard & can configure / tweak my box with no problem... with that said is Vista still shit even for people that understand how to make changes, modify registry (if necessary), blah blah with their pcs?

I'm thinking its time to step it up a notch...

Why you suggest him to use 64-bit operating system is 99% of available software is 32-bit?

Hint: 32-bit applications work a bit slower under 64-bit OS.

1. if he wants a machine with 4 gigs of ram, I guess there must be a reason for that... So why not recommend an OS that can actually use those 4 gigs. (32bit win xp won't be able to use all of those 4 gigs, not even with registry 'hacks')
2. if he wants a machine with 4 gigs of ram, I guess there must be a reason for that... probably wants to run some "heavy" programs... so 64bit is the way to go.
3. yes, 32bit apps run a tiny fraction of a second slower on a 64bit OS. First of all that's nothing you'll notice in a real world situation. Second of all, since 64bit versions are available of most "heavy" programs, this doesn't matter at all.
4. Win XP Pro x64 is not based on Win XP but on Win 2003. So Win XP Pro X64 is alot more stable than 32bit Win XP. So the added stability more than makes up for the 1 tenth of a nanosecond you'll loose by running a 32bit app on a 64bit OS.
5. Win XP Pro x64 has been available for a couple of years, SP2 was released a couple of months ago. So it's alot more mature than the new Vista.

I've heard plenty of peeps bark about Vista...

But I ended up purchasing a laptop recently - with Vista Home Premium - and have had zero problems with it.

Granted, I'm not doing anything heavy with it - just mobile computing/entertainment - maybe some light graphics and coding work... but I am left wondering what all the fuss is about.

If programs had issues with Vista when Vista was first released, they seemed to have addressed them by now. And The Service Pack is just around the corner (in January), so I'm sure that'll fix the majority of whatever problems people are still havening that I haven't experienced yet.

Only something like 2.8 gigs of it, or there-abouts.

Yesterday I was told 3.5... but the CPU compatibility also comes into play. I was going to get 4 GB but decided to just stick with 2 GB.

Used Vista a few times. Hated it. Still do. It has pretty, shiny widgets and some features that are quite cute for eyecandy, but almost entirely worthless. XP works just fine for now.

It does everything that XP does and in all honesty, if you can notice the speed difference about it being slower, you have a microprocessor for a brain.

So basically you're saying that XP is worse than Vista, because Vista is worthless but does all and more?

Sorry man ... I prefer Vista and I use it heavily.

I've noticed the 64 Vista is a bit buggy at times... but all in all runs pretty clean on my dual core 3 ghz, also with 4gbs ram...

XP 64 is still running on my slave boxes, and runs a tad more stable... but no huge differences.

Vista is a pile of shit. Is not a matter of being knowledgeable, its a matter of programs simply not fucking working. For example, I have been wanting to try out this program called Formulator 4.2 to handicap horse races. So I recently made some time to do so. Below is my latest e-mail to their support department. All of these problems are Vista related and this is just one program. I have had problems like this on several other applications, so its not just a matter of one software publisher throwing shit out. And this program does come highly recommended, so I don't think its their fault.

----

Rather then address the complex software issues involved with Vista we are working towards upgrading Formulator to a web-based application with a target date of Decemeber. This will expand the capacity of users with different operating systems (including mac users who curretnly cannot access Formulator) to use the program. Once that upgrade is in place these problems should be solved and hopefully you will be able to use the program without the issues you are currently facing.

Subject: RE: Forumlator Problems

Hi again Lonnie,

Well, that did make it so that I can at least login.

However, the program has alot of errors.

When I try to access help, it gives me an error and refers me to the
Microsoft Website: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607

The clicking the PDF manual crashes my Adobe Acrobat 8.1 installation,
so I cannot open the manual. This happens if I try to open the manual
outside of the program as well, by directly clicking on the file. So
your file must have been created with a very old version of Adobe
Acrobat or it has a problem.

Trying to print I get errors and the program crashes. This happens
when trying to print to two separate printers.

The Beyer charts are not filled out. Is there data missing from the
download or is that a separate data product?

When I open the card, it goes through a decompression process and
errors out at the end with a generic error, saying it could not unzip
the file. The file appears to open and I can see PP data, but this
could be why the Beyer data does not seem to be there.

When do you plan to offer true support for Vista? Clearly this program
was never intended for Vista. It looks like it could be useful, but
before I drop $800 a year on a data subscription to feed it, I need to
see it working.

Thanks.

No, what I'm saying is that Vista is XP. We didn't get WinFS, we got a slightly better TCP stack, and a few other things, oh, and weather and shit on the desktop. Swell. It still doesn't warrant itself being an OS replacement.

I'm basically waiting for SP1 and I might make the move. I'm looking at 8GB+ RAM for my next system.. that and dx10 are the compelling reasons for me.
