The large things with fans in them are, in my experience, worthless crap. I have a hunk of plastic, better known as a CoolPad. It holds the machine up and keeps it stable while letting it vent. I'm on my second; they replaced the first one I bought when they came out with a new model which held larger laptops better.

I have one costed me around 35$ It's a little noisy and it brings the laptop up about an inch and a half or so above the pc desk. However I can leave my laptop on all day and night without it over heating.

That's not going to help your laptop cool off.

I've got the one pictured below. Seems to keep everything nice and cool and not make too much noise.

Think about it, the fans take their power from a USB connection which means they draw more current from the laptop power supply which makes it heat even more and shortens its life.
