D.C. Jail Mistakenly Released 4 Inmates

It would not be soo bad, but one of the guys they accidentally released was a Pakistani student who pleaded guilty to threatening to kill the president. (shouldn't he be back in Pakistan?) He turned himself back in, but if he were some Al Queada terrorist would he have carried out his threat?

Two of the four inmates who were mistakenly discharged between Aug. 19 and Aug. 25 have turned themselves in, including Khushal Khan, 32, the author of a threatening e-mail to Bush on Sept. 19, 2001. One other has been apprehended, and the fourth remains at large.

Khan attended George Washington University on a student visa and was two courses away from a master's degree from the school of engineering. Khan, whose student visa has been revoked because of unauthorized travel to Pakistan, pleaded guilty to sending Bush the e-mail with the heading "I will kill you." According to an affidavit by a Secret Service agent, Khan wrote, "If I am forced to go home, I swear to god I will try to blow your place up." He also admitted forwarding the e-mail to first lady Laura Bush, Vice President Cheney and his wife, Lynn, the affidavit states.

Several days after his release in late August, Khan contacted the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service and arranged to surrender. The INS had filed two detainers with the D.C. jail -- one after his arrest last September and another last month -- to ensure that Khan was held after he completed his sentence.

"He was released over a weekend and spent at least two nights at Union Station because he initially had no identification and was unable to get a hotel room because of that," said one of his attorneys, Elita Amato. "After talking with him on the phone and meeting at my office twice, I put Mr. Khan in contact with the agent handling his INS case. And then he decided when to call her."
