Looks good. But I really hate when the eye candy slows down my system. I rather use something that's fast, secure and stable.
It's too bad there's so many Windows applications I need to run, otherwise I would've switched to Linux a long time ago.

Why settle for a copy cat of Vista's mediocre (at best) attempt at providing a pretty desktop?

I'm waiting for Gutsy Gibbon (Ubuntu 7.10). It's coming out on the 18 October 2007.
Does anyone know if ATI have released the source code for the drivers yet, or when they will do that?

Unix as a desktop is entirely safe, mostly because most end users wouldn't be able to anything useful with it.
Everyone pisses on windows, but in the end, it is the glue that makes things work. |

The real world. My office sends your office a document to work on. My accountant sends your accounts payable details of last years accounts payable. My graphics designer sends your magazine an ad to be run.
The real key and the real reason computers do so much in the world is because we can create and move things from place to place, share, work together, make different versions, revise... it is bad enough that there is always little PC vs Mac issues, adding in a *nix with totally incompatible desktop programs isn't going to help things much. I know there are programs for 'nix that can read word files and such, but they are a pain and not really useful for end users. Can you imagine the typical office secretary type suddently moved from windows to *nix? Yeah, there is a huge productivity boost there! |

Great, so it's just about as usable as Vista, with even less software.

Just so you know: GIMP is not, and will never be Photoshop you arrogant prick.
People don't want to have to upgrade their wine revisions for workarounds due to shitty software that may, or may not work the next week. Advocating the use of Linux over Windows because you think it's really neat is not going to do anything but annoy the people you're trying to convert. It works for you? That's swell. My clients don't have 5 hours a day to read a FAQ to get some environmental variable set so they can force-load a DLL copied over from Win98 to get IE6 running under ies4linux. Nor should they. They should be able to use what they want and have their staff support them to the best of their ability.

Microsoft plugs 6 security holes
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071009/ap_on_hi_te/microsoft_security;_ylt=Ao_lTSBAkrM6cNI7dz0wY1Cs0N UE SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp. issued six security patches in a regular update Tuesday, among them fixes for flaws that could let hackers hijack computers using a Web browser. The software maker gave four of the security updates its most urgent "critical" rating. Within that group, Microsoft used a single update to fix several separate flaws found in different versions of the Internet Explorer Web browser, including the most recent, IE7. That patch blocks any attempts by attackers to put fake content into the address bar of a Web browser ? a technique used in phishing scams to convince Web surfers that a fake site is actually their bank, for example. The patch is also meant to prevent hackers from breaking into Web surfers' computers using specially crafted Web pages. "There has always been this escalating arms race" between hackers and security professionals, said Ben Greenbaum, a senior manager at Symantec Security Response. "Lately, the stakes are higher. People are losing actual money due to attacker activities." The three other "critical" patches also help keep hackers from breaking into users' computers to steal information or install malicious software. One fixes a problem with Kodak Image Viewer, formerly known as Wang Image Viewer, used on computers that run Windows 2000 or that were upgraded from Windows 2000. Another critical patch fixes a flaw in the way newsgroups are handled by Outlook Express and Windows Mail. The third protects users of Microsoft Word 2000 and 2004 and Office for Mac 2004 from malicious Word documents. Microsoft also issued two "important" patches ? the software maker's second-most-urgent rating ? related to Windows, Office and Sharepoint. Windows users can visit Microsoft's security Web site to get the updates, or configure their computers to automatically update each month. don't forget your update tuesday ![]() love you windows people out there on the front lines of spyware, malware and shitware taking all the hits so the rest of us don't. |

What is IEs4Linux? IEs4Linux is the simpler way to have Microsoft Internet Explorer running on Linux (or any OS running Wine). No clicks needed. No boring setup processes. No Wine complications. Just one easy script and you'll get three IE versions to test your Sites. And it's free and open source. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
