i can get a decent 5.6KB stream into about 2mb for about 5 mins at a pretty decent quality/sound.

The size of the file isn't important, it's the quality of the video you're attempting to squeeze down the line. The higher the quality, the more bits you're sending. When you reduce the quality you reduce the number of bits required for each second of playback. That's what you have to think about, not file size.
