unless you are a truly fierce pirate you will most likely feel sorry for the intruder and not smash him as hard as you should

he then takes your bat and sticks it in your ass

or unless you enjoy violence
then you will be ok

If I was into violence then I'd have a gun like half the people in this thread are suggesting

Damn.. but good thing you were home

Casa Nova 10-02-2007 10:51 PM

BUmp keys can open a dead bolt. You should invest in a more expensive and bump key immune lock mechanism. It's surprising how many people go out and buy a $20 lock to secure a $300 000+ Home and expect it to work.. you get what you pay for, and most lock can be opened in 20 seconds by a bump key.

Semi-Retired-Dave 10-02-2007 10:53 PM

That sucks,
Get a sign that reads, never mind the Dog, beware of OWNER!!! With a gun next to it.

At that point I'd just grabbed my camera but I hadn't switched it on. He got a nice shock when he saw me standing right behind the door he'd just forced.

I said "what the fuck are you doing", then he stepped towards me with the tire iron above his shoulder before running off. I held the door closed for about 10 sec because I didn't know if he was going to come back with his buddy in the car. By the time I went out again they were long gone.

Cops got here in about 5 mins because they were nearby investigating another "at home" burglary where the guys walked out with a TV while the kids were upstairs. Probably the same guys that did my place.

I got a good look at him but unfortunately I only saw a small portion of the car through the gap in our blinds.

The scary thing was how easily he got the door open, you wouldn't even know it had been forced unless you were looking closely for scruff or scratch marks. Turns out the aluminium frame is easily warped which means all you need to do is some minor levering before the bolt pops in and the door opens.

Three things I'm doing today-

1. Buying a CCTV camera and setting up one of my home server boxes to record when someone moves into an "area of interest" in the frame.

2. Buying a fake alarm box.

3. Buying a baseball bat.

A deadlock was installed last night and the frame will be strengthened today.

If it happens again I think I'll give the camera a miss, I was thinking logically rather than of my own personal safety.

all you need to do is 1 thing, buy a pitbull. I bet they wont try to break into your place ever again.

or you could spend $5 for a beware of dog sign and then just bark when people come to the door you dont know.

LiveDose 10-02-2007 11:00 PM

You grabbed your camera. I would have grabbed my Glock.

2. Buying a fake alarm box.-Bad idea...will that only alert you when there are fake burglars... You need a real system.. It's only $30.00 a mth or less.

3. Buying a baseball bat.-Bad idea... What if the perp has gun... You need a gun... I have a 25 and my husband carries a 9.

A deadlock was installed last night and the frame will be strengthened today.- Upgrade and throw and few chain locks too... Also a peep hole.

If it happens again I think I'll give the camera a miss, I was thinking logically rather than of my own personal safety.- Yes, If I wear there... I would of popped you. You don't grab the camera, you run...

You are making a lot of assumptions. Firstly, domestic thieves in Australia generally do not carry firearms. Guns only make a situation like this worse. A baseball bat or pick handle will do the job nicely.

Yep, I'll admit it wasn't the smartest thing to do. I grabbed the camera when I saw he was moving around outside, at that point I was a little uneasy but I didn't think it was someone trying to break in. I got preoccupied with creeping around and finding the battery, so I was back at the door just as he forced it. A few seconds later and the camera would have been turned on, taking the shot would have been better for the cops but it could have turned out worse for me...

Next time I'll make plenty of noise long before I conclude it's a friend or foe on the other side.

i bet you anything if you would have taken the picture he would have wanted it and he would have introduced you to mr tire iorn. Not smart thing to take his picture with him standing in front of you.

next time you see someone snooping around pick up phone call the police.

I love some of you people with the "I would have done this and that"

most of you need to shut the fuck up, cause you'd be hiding under your bed in a fetal possition crying your eyes out :1orglaugh

If anyone were ever to break into my house they first have to get passed my big dog - he's a labrador and very friendly but damn he gets pissed when people threaten me.

Then if they somehow managed to get by the dog, they would have to get passed my solid iron bar I keep upstairs and also one down stairs in the kitchen just incase.

If they got passed that then they can pretty much take what they want I guess :)

Aka_Bluey 10-03-2007 04:47 AM

A friend has this sign hangen up at his place, gets a few raised eyebrows, lol.

Instead of hangen a "Beware of the dog" sign.

He has,

"The bible says to forgive one's trespassers, we dont we shoot the bastards".

:winkwink:

Lykos 10-03-2007 07:09 AM

that really sux, sorry to hear that!

SifuE 10-03-2007 07:23 AM

Good to know ur safe, I just moved to Az an own like 9 guns 8 rifles 4 machine guns. Let them break in ill put 30+ rounds thru them with my AK-47..

pornguy 10-03-2007 08:10 AM

You should have kicked the door into his face and then beat the living shit out of him, When the cops arrived, just tell them he fell. But be honest about the falling. He fell 3 or 4 times.

cool1 10-03-2007 08:22 AM

bummers to hear that.
you should forget the baseball bat and go get one of those samurai swords.
much better for swingin than a bat, does more damage too.

I wait for the day someone breaks in while I'm home.. :ak47:

Tom_PM 10-03-2007 09:03 AM

What a crazy situation.. glad it ended without any bloodshed. Can't imagine a worse situation except a bullet riddled body, just like on tv! blah.

Your steps seem right to me. You can buy stickers for your windows that indicate your house has alarm systems. Anyone but a seriously professional burglar will immediately leave if they think you have alarms.

There was a case here where a burglar got in to someones home, and the home owner stabbed them multiple times with a kitchen knife and managed to paralyze the guy in the process. The burgaler WON the court case against the homeowner. Fucked up. I think it was on Oprah a few years ago.

Better to work to prevent them WANTING to come in, than shoot or stab or bludgeon them after the fact. If they get in, your system failed... Look at it that way and you'll be in a good frame of mind to proceed.

That is exactly why you need to use a gun and empty the entire clip! A dead man cannot sue.

ShellyCrash 10-03-2007 09:27 AM

I used to live alone in this small 2 bedroom bungalow I was renting. I had the worst time with a prowler. He tried to break into the house several times, tried to take the door knob off with a hammer, etc. I'm glad he never got in, but he made several attempts and the cops never did anything to catch him. I think I would have pissed myself if he ever broke through the door. I can't imagine being face to face with a burgaler in my home. That sucks you didn't have a weapon of some kind. After dealing with that wackjob I keep myself armed to the teeth.
