Just get one off ebay and unlock it and it works fine.

theres heaps of unlocking tutorials online.

thats only if you upgrade it to firmware 1.1.1

the tutorial i found was for OSX and you could download the 1.02 firmware locally and then get itunes to install it from there. once you have 1.02 installed on the phone the jailbreak and sim unlock apps will work fine.

i got mine about 2 weeks ago and did this and its working perfectly.

from what ive read if you have an unlocked phone and then try to upgrade to 1.1.1 thats when they dont work and the fone may become a brick.
(although there may be ways to revert it if youve made that mistake but not sure on that one)
