    HSBC Interest rate drops 0.55%

I got this email the other day and it sucks. My online savings account was 5.05% and now they announced their savings account dropped to 4.5%. I like ING better anyway and ING pays 4.5% already. Lame

    Dear STEVE,

We are writing to let you know HSBC Direct has adjusted your Online Savings Account interest rate to 4.50% APY*.

This rate remains among America?s highest, at 10× the national savings average**?so you can continue to maximize your savings growth with HSBC Direct, recognized as the ?Best Online Savings Account? by Kiplinger?s Personal Finance.

              My Rate went up?

We have some great news for you. Effective October 11, 2007, the everyday savings rate on your Direct Savings Account will increase from 3.50% to 4.05%* - making your savings work harder for you so you can reach your financial goals faster.

              Heh go figure ;)

Considering the rates everyone else has posted, it sounds like you were being screwed before

I really trust ING the most though for some odd reason. I suppose since the sort of invented the online banking branchless idea and also withstood the dotcom crash just fine. That sort of history has kept me loyal to them even when they were not the highest rate.

Plus since they offered mutual funds, atm access, and hell they even send out checks for you and eat the postage if they can not ACH it over. That is the type of support I am after.

PS. If your thinking of setting up an account hit me up before you do and start your account by depositing 250.00 and ING will credit you 25.00 and give me 10.00. That is an extra 10% right there. Haha yes I am that cheap that I will reffer some people in if they ask to make us both some extra cash. So drop me an email or icq about it.

Do you guys have insurance in the US if a bank goes out of business you will get x amount of money back? In Sweden we have it and it's like $35k-40k per account and person.

Yeah, there's FDIC insurance up to $100k for a normal account.

The highest rate we have in Sweden is 4.1% right now, but they payout the rate 4 times/year and not 1/year like the rest of the banks do so it's ok

if i understand it correctly then it is not per account, it is per person.. so if you have 3 accounts with HBSC each with 100k (total 300k), you would only be covered for 100k total. you may want to check that if you are wealthy...

I would have to double check. For the most part once money goes there it does not come out, except for the rental deposits I place there.

You can have multiple accounts at a bank but it has to be done in a different fashion. One way to do that is if you add in trust of(say your minor child) that gets its own 100k. Also if you have a personal savings and a joint savings. plus your spouse has a personal checking that is 300k between those three.

But if you have a checking, savings, cd, second savings, or whatecver you have a limit of 100k.
