How much are you paying for hosting?

What are the fair prices these days? I've heard it was around $0.10 per gig. So if you're on a 1500gig a month plan it should cost around $150. What about mbps? If you're donig 10mbps on your 95 percentile plan should you be paying $300-350?

( I used a light bulb as a post icon. Good idea. )

Hey,

Ever seen that AskNinja dude Providing all the good answers.

Well let me fill in the blanks.

Per GB pricing ranges from $0.05 to $0.40/GB

And per Mbps pricing ranges from $7/Mbps to $100/Mbps

It all depends on a number of factors, but usually what happens is the more managed hosts do not charge you a management fee, but factor it into your bandwidth costs.

The low end of the price ranges are for over-subscribed sub-par networks. Think 99c stores, where as the upper ranges are or premium exclusive services, like Porsche or Ferrari.

Overall you need to find a good mix for your business, and considering that a fast, stable and secure online prescence is absolutely vital to everyone on this board, I would not skimp on your hosting provider.

Hosting, Content and Designers/Developers are probably your largest costs when it comes to production.

Then you have your affiliates and PPC when it comes to marketing.

One more thing that many people do not know. If you keep a website up and running fast, and always available, there's organic growth. Think of it like watering a plant everyday - over time with very little effort the plant will grow into a huge tree or maybe sprout flowers.

Same for websites, if they're kept online, fast and accessible they tend to grow on their own. However, if you introduce problems you can easily lose a ton of traffic without even realizing it.

Think of the following - say you get the same number of hits today as you did in addition to yesterday.

Day 1: 1 hit
Day 2: 2 hits
Day 3: 4 hits
Day 4: 8 hits
Day 5: 16 hits
Day 6: 32 hits

Now lets look at a downtime scenario of losing just 1 hit / downtime day and having a downtime every other day which results in losing 1 hit.

Day 1: 1 hit
Day 2: 2 hits
Day 3: 3 hits *downtime -1 hit
Day 4: 6 hits
Day 5: 11 hits *downtime -1 hit
Day 6: 22 hits

There you go, with 2 downtimes of losing just 1 hit you're looking at 10 hits less per day, when you do it as a percentage its STAGGERING!

So please think about your hosting, because it takes little effort to water a plant, but a ton of effort to manage your hosting so you NEVER lose a hit!
