OUCH The Canadian government got a court order to get records from Ebay...

On all those sellers in Canada who sold more than $1000 worth of product on ebay. I hope all you ebay sellers have been paying your taxes properly ;) The tax man cometh.

The only thing I've sold on Ebay was my Mac Powerbook and I took an $800 loss on that. I'm safe....so far!

Plus it was my understanding that unless you're buying things to resell, you're exempt from tax because you've already paid taxes on it. For instance, it's like a garage sale.

I always wondered about that... thinking about getting rid of some things around the house and was contemplating the suck of possibly having to pay taxes twice.

That is probably true on most goods now that you mention it. I'm sure a lot of people have ebooks or similiar things for sale that they would have to pay tax on though.

I don't get why they think all this stuff can be taxed again. If I buy something, use it and then decide to sell it they should be able to collect sales tax twice?

That doesn't seem right. Will the be taxing Garage Salers too?

i am not sure of canadian law... but realistically in the US we get double adn triple taxed all the time.

Yes, when you have a garage sale, that is income. You are supposed to pay taxes.

When you sell your used car you have already paid sales tax on it, but the buyer pays again from the sale.

If you were to look at how much we get taxed in the US, all of the sudden a flat tax on earnings doesn't start looking so bad (and just get rid of all other taxes). Income tax, sales tax, luxury tax, property tax, capital gains, etc etc etc.

Perhaps in some states, but in GA, if you buy a car from a "person" and not a business, you don't pay sales tax. Since there is no federal sales tax, state tax is all that would be affected by this transaction.

Yep, got all my shit properly filed in the books. It was back 3 years ago when I was selling photography equipment on eBay... Not anymore though. High eBay and PayPal fees plus competition from US sellers who sell stolen shit under dealer cost made it not a profitable venture anymore. So I started with porn instead :D

I don't think they are targeting the guys who are selling their old record collections. They are targeting people who are businesses trying to avoid taxes.

They will probably be looking for Canadians not charging GST to fellow Canadians as well. (And the PST for people in their own province)

There's no need to pay taxes if your dispose of personal property. If you make a business selling goods on eBay, you have to charge GST to Canadians and pay tax on profits.

Taxes in Canada are low; there's no need to try to screw the system, it's not worth it when you factor in possible penalties and interests.

6% sales tax, and you're not the one paying it, the customer is.

Corporate taxes are around 17% for small businesses ($400k profit or less). Dividends are tax free up to $40k, and with $500k in dividends you'd pay around 22%.

Taxes are low in Canada

Jeezuz, where do some of you Americans hear such foolishness?

On certain things there is both GST (federal) and PST (provincial sales tax)

It's 6% and 7% respectively.

On certain things only PST applies, and on other things both apply. That's still only 13%, is that really that much more than what Americans pay when State & Federal taxes apply? Somehow I doubt it.

More like people charging taxes but not remitting it to the government.

I made a purchase a few months back from a power seller, and he charged me GST but never put down his registration number on the invoice. Since this was a company purchase I wanted to put it in the books and the guy just ignored me.
