Acacia Technologies Acquires Rights To Patent For Video Editing Technology

Acacia Technologies Acquires Rights To Patent For Video Editing Technology

Yesterday, Acacia Technologies announced that it has acquired rights to a patent relating to video editing technology. The press release says that the "patented technology generally relates to altering video streams in real time to remove portions of an original image and substitute elements to create a new image. This technology can be used to digitally change the background of a video image without using traditional blue screen techniques."

I'm trying to get more details on the patent number(s) but so far, Acacia is not providing any of that info. As anyone who has followed the online video industry may remember, Acacia Technologies was the firm that hit many in the market with letters claiming that their DMT (Digital Media Transmission) patents were being infringed upon and covered just about every form of video delivery over IP. For more on Acacia you can visit the special patent section on the StreamingMedia.com website at streamingmedia.com/patent

You can also learn more about other companies aggressively pursuing patents as potential revenue generators in my article from June entitled "Digital Media Patents for Profit".

Their entire business model is to find general and vague patents that could relate to some existing business use, and then start trying to license the stuff.

Acacias DMT patents are pretty much expired by now, if I remember correctly.

The system needs to be changed so that it is illegal to buy a patent just go sue people who've been using the technology for years.

I agree, to go after editors is going to be hard. Its like having the patent for the steering wheel and going after drivers.

First the DMT patents are not just about to expire - just ask all the folks who settled and have to pay them - but our case against them goes well and I am confident that our defense group will prevail. The judge has already destroyed a few of their claims.

Next, Acacia is always going to come up with new nebulous patents to try and claim dues... that is their business model.

Their lawsuits are bullshit. When I make a video, the software I use is covered by dozens of patents. I see them every time I boot up the program I use. You need to go after the creators of the software not the end users.

The above reference to the patenting the steering wheel and going after the drivers sounds about right.

Special thanks to Homegrown and Lightspeed Cash who are still paying money to fight this in court!

Everyone saying this is bullshit I use this program or this method, it doesn't really matter.

Do you remember last time? they hit and a LOT of people got letters. if you didnt you probably werent big enough. Some people got together to fight while some big programs just paid them off.

Now, the same shit all over again? How many times are they going to do it? How many other companies are going to start doing the same shit? it's definatly not a joke

Everyone thought the DMT claims were about the same as the Nigerian bank scam when they first heard about it too...

The good news is I bet they are going to think twice about the so called "low hanging fruit" in the next round of their quest for licensing.
