Halo 3 outsells every other entertainment release in history ! $170 Million first day

http://videogames.yahoo.com/news-532002

It's amazing seeing that one game can sell $170 in ONE day. You can imagine how much it's gonna make by the end of the holiday season.

The power of video gamers, gotta love it

Wooops, gotta correct myself, I said $170 above when it should've been $170 MILLION. I figured I'd correct it before someone else does and it's too late to edit.

Yup, nothing can touch the power of games these days. The movie Spiderman3 took a whole weekend to bring in $151 million, Halo 3 outstrips it in one day.

I guess it's the difference between watching a movie or actually playing the lead part in an interactive movie. Regular movies can't compare.

And it's going to get much, much worse for certain types of movies and TV shows when video game graphics rival that of actual real life footage. This could even go so far as to hurt the watching of pro sports.

What are we looking at here... Fifteen years or so before video games look close to real TV?

Once they more fully develop the virtual reality stuff people will eventually stop interacting with one another all together.

Pretty amazing logging onto Halo3 Xbox live and seeing 680,000 people live playing Halo3 at that very moment online or with friends, or in combit with each other.

Thats the size of my entire city, every single person in my city playing Halo3 at the same time.

WOW

Gears of war was far better in my book, but the Halo3 game is still good. Like Halo 1 feel with far better grahpics, I never liked Halo2's graphics engine.

I dont get HALO hype... it never stood out from any other FPS game i've played.. its the same old shit. Got bored after playing the second one a for an hour or two and never wanted to touch it again. Dont know much about 3, but it looks about the same from what I've seen.

I don't think that's a fair compairson since Halo 3 was available to " Pre Order " over several months. If that stat means it did $170 milllion in NEW sales on it's first day that would be one thing but if they are counting new and pre order sales I don't see how you could compare that to a movie release on it's opening day

I never got the hype. I played Halo 1 when I got my Xbox and was instantly bored... I'd rate at least 10-15 other FPS games above it.

Now that the series is bringing in record numbers I'm baffled.

it doesn't change the fact that people are still giving up $70.

it's dollar value that they are comparing...not units.

if Halo 3 sold for $10 but was counted as $70 then you'd have an argument on your hand.

The difference between Halo and other FPS to me is that Halo is on the Xbox and has a huge online muliplayer platform. I love games like counter strike but it's nice to chill in your living room and play online or with friends. Especially since we spend so much time at our computers already.

First of all not all games make money. Just like movies you have a bunch of stinkers out there.

Secondly a movie like Spiderman 3 or Transformers also makes money on the video game, DVD, PPV and cable rights, toys, product tie ins etc etc.

WOW a whole whopping ONE example.

Spiderman 3 product tie ins > than Halo 3 tie ins.

Also Halo 3 does NOT have DVD or PPV and cable rights income.

Burger King
Pontiac (A Halo Edition G6)
Mountain Dew Halo 3 Game Fuel limited flavor
Nascar
Zune Halo 3 Edition

Not to mention commercials with large independent movie budgets.

Did I also forget to include that Halo 3 marketing has it's own Wikipedia Page?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marketing_for_Halo_3

Agreed Bioshock was way better. I was expecting Gears of War level of polish to Halo but it just isn't there. It's good but not $170M good.

Not to mention commercials with large independent movie budgets.
Commericals COST money, not make money. No one is paying to watch a commercial like people pay to watch a movie. So your point is moot.

Did I also forget to include that Halo 3 marketing has it's own Wikipedia Page?
see above.

Once again how many DVD sales is Halo 3 selling? How much money on PPV or cable rights ( ie HBO, Showtime etc ) is Halo 3 making?

Fuck you, I do know what I am talking about. Not to mention the guy who brought this up only used Spiderman 3 DOMESTIC opening box office. Spiderman 3 has actually made $890 million to date worldwide just in box office. Halo 3 has a LONG way to go.

Once GatorB finds something to argue about he sinks his teeth in like a pitbull, and will only stop once the dead horse is properly beaten.

Again, the only point here is that a game has finally topped all other forms of entertainment release for opening day profit generated INCLUDING the top first weekend grossing film of all time.

That's it, that's all.

As far as peripheral and ongoing profits, you can add new sales of XBOX 360's to the list mentioned earlier. That alone is also huge. And down the road MS will likely do the same thing they did with Halo 2 and release H3 in PC game format a few years from now and generate another wave of millions in profit.

So this game in particular has a very good shot at outstripping any and all movies made for ALL income, not just the first day or first weekend. But that in and of itself is huge. I mean who in the past 90-odd years of filmmaking ever forsaw a day when a mere game would do that? Up until now the movie has been king.

Nothing to get all "fuck you" about. :D

Like all movies that open you have to wait until they come out on dvd. Well Halo movie is in the makes, so when it does, the dvd will follow and your argument will be MOOT. Funny how you scoff at the size of their marketing yet they pushed the game in almost the same fashion as any other BIG movie with mountain dew and Burger King. Those are huge ads that only blockbuster movies even bother purchasing. You sound foolish. Seriously.
