A friend of mine worked through a temp agency at a local business. Everything was going smooth for the first several months until some lady at her job "joked" that a guy in upper management was her boyfriend in front of some people. This guy and my friend would talk occassionally although he was not known to be very social or friendly. Basically, he talked to you only when he had to sort of deal. This crazy lady then went on telling people my friend spread crazy rumors about her around the job. My friend told this lady to take a hike and she was canned two days later. The lady went into one of the managers office and next thing my friend knew she no longer worked there. Should my friend let it be or give this woman a taste of her own medicine?
take legal action or just drop it?

I guess it really depends on if the hassle would be worth the possible outcome (as different locations have different laws/procedures so it's hard to tell just how dificult a lawsuit might be).
Sometimes it's best to walk away and find better to begin with imho
