Thinking of getting an iMac... any thoughts?

I need a new computer, mainly for writing and (some) designing/light coding, and the new 20" iMac seems perfect.

Any thoughts/experiences with regards to reliability and such?

(and yes, I am specifically looking for something that is easy on the eyes, with few cables and clutter)

If you already own a mac. I cant imagine you would go with anything else.

If I were buying another laptop, it would be a no-brainer.

I'm not familiar with their desktops, though, so I'm curious if those are as good as their laptops.

Actually, I'll keep this particular computer offline. Internet connections are terribly distracting things.

oh, then I'd just get a tower, but wait for the new OS to come out in fall. That way you can expand it whenever you need etc.. assuming you don't have a tower already. The Imacs look great, but being able to get a bigger better display easily add memory, cards etc is better than the imac I think unless it's targeted for a tv room or something.

A tower would be overkill. I am tempted to get one all the same, but really, this is a computer which will only be used for writing and light coding.

I already have gear for heavier stuff, this will just be a glorified typewriter

for sure get one, but like gleem said... Wait for the new OS and get one then. Unless you neeeed it yesterday...Otherwise wait. With bootcamp, etc. can use vista, xp, etc. too so best choice you can make really.

Macs are like Canada - simply better.

Only complaint about Mac OSx on the desktop is the stupid mouse acceleration, I guess its a love/hate sort of thing. If you've only used the laptop and never used a mouse with it, then you may be in for a surprise.

If you arent a fan of it like I'm not you can still get a Microsoft mouse and install all of the drivers and it will be like a regular mouse.

Otherwise I've used Mac Pros and Mac Minis for work both are great, I think the iMac is the perfect middleman and with so little clutter its a great choice.

I have the 20' from last year. great computer. Get it.

Mysetup, 17 Macbookpro, with 40in wide screen on desk, the 20' imac to my left aech with a lacie 1TB external drive at firewire800, networked together with a gigabyte switch, which also connects my older duel athlon box, which I run using remote destop from the macbook pro. Works like a charm,I use the 20' to sit an capture DV tape all day, the MAcbook pro for 80% of everything else and the duel athone has become file storage and for running the VERY few programs that are only XP based. Oh I have another laptop that I use around the house and in my pathfinder, just because I don't care if it gets beat up...

Took a look at it in the store today - looks absolutely perfect. I'm still in doubt whether to get it right now or wait for Leopard, though.

check on craigslist before u buy from apple.com... its way over priced.

Also, if you do end up buying on apple.com, goto the education area and say ur a student... you will get a discount.

If that doesnt work, i think you can get a discount by saying ur a dev engineer or something, but you might have to research that

I hate Apple. It's like a midly cute girl in a club who thinks she's a model. You'll end up paying too much, receive bad service and not be satisfied at the end.

Unfortunately, there are signs that Apple is headed down a questionable path for its design choices. In his press event announcing the iMac, Apple chief executive Steve Jobs claimed that customers "loved" glossy displays; we respectfully disagree. The benefits it provides are useful primarily under controlled lighting and for marketing the system in a store. If your home has bright spot lighting that can't be moved or you're a professional who has to judge color accuracy on the fly, the gloss could be troublesome and a potential deal-breaker. Apple should have at least offered matte screens on some models or as a custom option.

the new iMacs are great machines, the only two things i would think could be a caveat to some are the new keyboard (MacBook style 'inset' keys) and the fact that the screens are only available in glossy.

since you mention you already have a MacBook though and they only come w/ glossy screens too, these two issues probably are not downsides to you. for an AIO machine it really cant be beat and is quite lovely when set up... the "WAF" is high w/ this one, could almost go as far as to say it is "living room friendly"...

the one thing friends who have purchased them lately have mentioned as that they are waiting for the graphics drivers for the new nVidia chipsets to be updated, which will be along shortly w/ the next incremental update... nVidia chipsets are recent to Apples latest machines..

I would highly recommend the new iMac. The new look is great and I like the thinner keyboard. I have had PC's too long. Buying my first mac next month.
