XBIZ reports on Piracy Round Table Meeting (link)

Thanks Xbiz.

http://www.xbiz.com/news/83321

CHATSWORTH, Calif. ? A coalition of content producers fed up with rampant Internet piracy has come together to form an antipiracy roundtable meeting scheduled for Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. at the Universal Sheraton Hotel in Universal City, Calif.

?Illegal distribution of copyrighted materials has became too much to bear and it?s time to do something about it,? said Airek, head of Internet operations at Shane?s World Studios. ?Increasingly, DVD bootlegging, torrent, tube and password trading sites, among other avenues of distribution, are becoming plague-like and will soon overtake legitimate avenues of content distribution if something isn?t done now.?

While the meeting takes place in the San Fernando Valley in L.A., the epicenter of the adult industry in the U.S., content owners, distributors and producers from across the country are invited to participate.

?We feel strongly from a studio standpoint that this needs to be grass-roots oriented, not for profit and a piracy defense association built from within the industry,? Airek said. ?No one looks out for your interests more than someone that is affected by the same issues. Having an anti-piracy association based and formed from within the content industry just makes sense.?

The formation of the roundtable meeting comes on the heels of the Free Speech Coalition?s announcement of an anti-piracy committee on Aug. 15.

Megan Stokes, vice president of sales at Shane?s World, said that the meeting isn?t to solicit donations but to get a dialogue started among the very group of people piracy hurts the most. Additionally, the group will discuss forming its own piracy association primarily composed of content producers.

?This industry is deteriorating from within by other adult businesses supporting these types of companies in the form of advertising and financing,? Stokes said. ?The history of adult is we don?t come together. We hope to change that and make us a stronger and more effective community. We must address these issues seriously if we intend to protect our futures. We?ve had enough, and we?re going to try to put everyone together in a room and hash it out on Sept. 5. This is a call to action.?

Content producers wishing to attend the roundtable meeting are encouraged to contact Airek or Stokes by calling (818) 717-8851, or emailing [email protected] and [email protected], respectively.

BTW,

We had no idea of the FSCs interest in starting an anti piracy committee and it wouldn't have made a difference really if we had known. This thing needs to happen from within the content producers world. Whatever the FSC does, I am sure it will compliment what we intend to do and serve the greater good of the community.

Thanks.

The meeting should be about the new way to make money from porn, not how to stop piracy...

Thats what the music, movie and every other industry is doing and I'm sure they have a bit more pull.

But does the music industry have ads to itunes? or the movies have ads to netflix/blockbuster online?

He is right, the music industry is fighting and not winning so well ...

I'm not saying coming together as an industry is a bad idea, but is this just gonna be a bitch session on torrent sites?

So maybe all the donations gathered should be saved to invest in DRM?

We get something new thrown at us all the time, from 2257, to Acacia, to torrent sites. People will always try and scam and a round table isn't going to fix it.

I'm not trying to be negative, again it's good to see the industry pull together. I just think there is a better solution.

Eric,

Do you have a list of attendees together yet, or will there be a list provided on a site?

as a content producer we would love to see NA there. We are not going to publish the list because we do not want any outsiders attempting to sway attendees or contact them in anyway attempting to modify their decisions to attend. many do not want this to happen. i can tell you that the list of studios is impressive, and that those that have had enough are well known, and in several instances household names.

we're expecting 100+

now, whether we can get anyone to agree on anything or support an association remains to be seen.

controlling the content is a start. no one has blindly ran into this thing without knowing technology or its potential application. we've heard some amazing suggestions, all custom written so far, as well as silver light.

stopping the outbound content is important, but it does not stop anyone from ripping dvds that we spend 50k on and using good technology for bad purposes. i'm sure i can go out there right now and send you a list to pass on to kevin of at least 20 pink visual titles from dvd. i don't think you'd argue that those dvds ripped and available on those sites is helping your bottom line.

this is so much deeper than anyone sees at the moment. holding those accountable for supporting those networks through the funding of their overhead and profit margins is necessary just as much as stopping the content flow on the web side.

accountability.

Thank You Mark, Naughty America is a large producer of content and in my opinion based on what I am seeing in stolen content land, one of the most pilfered content banks ever, next to lightspeed.

Your presence there is appreciated.

As a consolidated group we can make a difference for all.

from my site:

Apparently theres some concern over the issue that has prompted an industry round table in LA on Sept. 5th. While I applaud the concern it appears to me to be a bit misguided.

First thats only 2 weeks away and two weeks isnt long enough to even get their arms around the issue to know what they are discussing, much less propose solutions on how to fix it.

Second This needs to invlove people outside porn valley...particularly internet people and Sept 5th is unrealistic to ask them to participate. This should be done in conjunction with Adult Expo and Internext for maximum turnout and maximum effect. It seems business as usual in that Porn Valley seems to think that this business doesn't have anyone meaningful who doesn't operate from there. Too bad, it could have had potential, a reactionary response simply isnt going to cut it, or to coin a Mike South-ism You can take the right road, but if all you do is stand in the middle of it yer gonna be road kill.

Why the negativity? Isn't getting any of these people in a room an accomplishment in itself?

No, that is where you are wrong, and this message has originated. You feel left out. You will have plenty of opportunity to be part of this. No one is conspirating to keep anyone out of anything.

thanks mike.

anything is better than nothing. there have been a few already to poke at us. i think this industry almost prides itself on sitting on its hands. i don't think anyone really knows what we know or don't know at this point, but i can tell ya, its gonna be damn organized and there is a massive grasp and understanding of what is going on, and a course of action, that won't be discussed here where the enemy lies.

anything is better than nothing.

if the people put together can't accomplish what they asked me to put them in the room to do, that isn't my issue.

thanks for your post.

The thing that sucks about this issue is that the people who are profiting from it (dating programs, toy programs, etc) aren't affected by content theft.

They don't produce content so they could care less. The sites that are doing this can't make money by selling memberships, because they give away entire members areas for free, so blackballing them won't help either.

The people who produce content by and large don't have alot of traffic, and the traffic they do have is used to promote their own products, so these companies really have no leverage against the Adult Friend Finders of the world.

One thing that is still true about this business is that traffic rules. If you get the people with the big traffic to blacklist the companies that are making these tube and torrent sites profitable, maybe THEN you'll have the leverage you need.

It's open to all content producers not just people in porn valley.Considering most of porn internet and video is produced in that area it makes scene to have it there. I also think to have this meeting at a show is not the best place. Most aren't producers and to control who comes and who doesn't would be a nightmare.

while I agree that anything is better than nothing reacting without planning is barely better than nothing. and as far as feeling left out...no. I write about piracy on my blog and it reaches more people in porn valley in a day than I would with a trip to participate in your round table.

Dont get me wrong I applaud that you are doing something but you would have better success if you took the time to clearly identify the problem then work out a solution.

Yes piracy is a problem but do you know on how many fronts? do you know anyone who has been successful at combating it on these fronts? I dont need to be present to help you but what I see is a mob ready to lynch someone...they just dont know who and in the long run all it does is satisfy a blood lust.

This took years to develop, to fight it you will need a well thought out plan and well organized group and if anyone in the group strays....the mission fails.

Good Luck and if I can somehow help Im happy to do it.

You have already seen that the FSC is simply paying it lip service so dont look to them for anything meaningful.

the fsc isn't involved with this. they have their own thing as far as i know. i think that because of the secrecy to protect anything that will be created out of this, it may seem that this was sprung on the community. that is far from true. this is the result of 8+ months, maybe longer of research and planning. i keep telling people that everything i do is calculated and has a reason as to why its done at the time it is. if you would like to discuss it on the phone, i'd be happy to talk to you on the telephone tomorrow sometime. this was well thought out and there is much that we are not going to reveal for valid reasons. one of the laws of power is act dumber than you are. thats just one of the chess moves i'm playing here. but seriously, if you would like to talk to me, i am all for it. i know who you are and what you contribute to the content community.
