question about bandwidth and the effect of alot of visitors on a site
Hi all,
I'm running a bunch of top site lists and read in the past how some hosts don't like hosting top sites. It had something too do w/ even thought the bandwidth usage wasn't high, the amount of visitors on the site was somewhat overwhelming. What is the effect of having alot of visitors on one page at the same time? Why would a host not like this even if I am using less than my given bandwidth transfer? thanks!

Unless you have 3000 people hitting your site every second....
the only reason I can see a host not wanting your business is if you are using up all the available apache processes on the virtual server... and I somehow doubt that a toplist site will do that. it's funny how all the hosts here are ready to spam away their services but no one wants to help out on a legitimate question... |

SickKittens,
L0stmind is actually right in his answer. The problem is most people running top sites have modified scripts rather than running the script the way it comes and therefore they don't close the processes they are using. This practice overloads the processes on a machine and makes the machine unavailable for everybody else. However there are people using the scripts properly and those people have no problems. But usually hosts see the abuse with those scripts. Hit me up on ICQ 4433144 if you would like to discuss this. |
