    Have you heard of a dog that died while getting neutered ?

    My dog is very lively but is 12 years old. He is a Pomeranian so he could live quite a bit longer. One testicle is growing, the other is shrinking. My vet says they should be removed but he could die because my dog is older. Then the vet backed off the statement and said he hasn't lost a dog while neutering it in years and it would probably be ok. I can't find any odds on the internet. Does anyone have any experience with this?

                  well there is always a chance that a dog could die when he/she is put under.

                      Actually I belong to a few pet boards and yes peoples dogs have died while being neutered. Its surgery at the end of the day and if the dog goes under there is always a chance it gets fucked up.

                              Hard to say - and depends what the problem is. If the reason is currently unknown, it may be worth getting a a full diagnosis and establishing the cause. If it is eg a possible cancer problem or a condition which could lead to this type of problem - it's prob best left to your vet to make decisions.

                                          Yes it does rarely happen. General anesthetic always carries a risk, just like it does in humans. The older the dog the more the risk.

                                          One thing you can do is spring for the pre operation blood tests. They're not required, and cost around $50 but can identify any problems that might come up before the dog is under.

                                          Also, follow closely the instructions from the Vet for the night before and day of the operation. No food specifically.

                                                  Go back to the vets, or see a different vet, and explain your worries. Ask them for the odds, they should have some idea of how risky it is. Im no vet but id guess its the anesthetic thats the worry as your pet is older.

                                                      Thats a great idea and also get a ekg. So you have more info to decide with.

                                                          Ask your vet more questions.

                                                          It _sounds_ like this Vet has decided that the risk from possible cancer and/or other problems out weighs any risks for the surgery. But like I said, ask lots of questions.

                                                              personally i would take it to another vet if you have one around....if i had a doctor that said i would die then changed his mind a minute later i wouldn't let him anywhere near me on an operating table...but if he needs it done and there is a already a hint that something would go wrong due to age, i wouldn't procrastinate

                                                                          My pug had major surgery when she was 13. The vet called after surgery and said she wasn't doing too well. They watched her for a few hours and then we brought her home and she was doing pretty good.

                                                                          Years before that (and I forgot to bring this up before the surgery above... could have been why there was problems when she woke up) a different vet removed a tumor from her leg and said he was going to have tubes in her nose until she woke up. I don't know the precise reason for this, but you may want to ask about it. I think it has something to do with their small airways. Maybe it's just a Pug thing, or maybe it's all small dogs.
