Hey Kenny, same thing happened to me last night!

It smelled like a virus at first but god knows what it is. Shutting down all programs doesn't seem to work.

I've had it happen before on a different PC. Found it was my Nortons and Zonealarm.

I have this problem too...

Not only can I not defrag but I can't scan disk either!

I get "Scandisk encountered a data error while reading the FAT drive on drive C"

EMM 386 not installed

XMS manager not present

The following file is missing or corrupted C:\windows\himem.sys

I think it's corrputed because I'm pretty sure I still have the himem.sys file on my pc, so at least it's still there.

I also get some msg about bad boot sectors on my drive, and I have difficulty loading windows.

Is my pc still "save able" or is it hopeless? Sorry to intrude on your thread but I thought I would bring it up because I'm having similar problems.

Yes, Soul Rebel, I'm on that computer with all the error msg. It's really hard to get in Windows but I can get in eventually. Whenever I start my pc I also get "There's a problem with your hard drive, pls counsult your troubleshooting manual" or something to that effect.

I had this problem for a few days already, and searched in Google, but all the articles didn't help. Should I just format C?

I like a little proggie called Power Defrag. From the software description:

" Power Defrag is a system utility that improves the performance of the Windows disk, checking utilities and the disk defragmenter. By restarting your machine in a highly optimized configuration, Power Defrag decreases the amount of time taken to perform these tasks by a considerable amount. The disk checking and defragmenting utilities supplied with Windows can also lock your computer up under certain conditions. Power Defrag eliminates this problem in many cases."

Yup, some program keeps writing to disk, forcing it to restart. Shut them ALL down, and then try it. CTRL-ALT-DEL all those mo fo's.

Do like dirtyone said, shut down EVERYTHING except explorer. If you still have problems, try safe mode booting and repeat above.

If still problems, go out and get a Norton package which has the equivalent of scandisk/defrag. Norton's products are much better than the leftover MS ones.

Hehe, Looks like you lost your hymen..

Most of you other guys need to kill your AV software, it continualy scans and checks out movement on your HD so when scandisk and defrag do there stuff the AV program querries it and then it restarts..

What OS are you using and how old is your PC?

I haven't seen those errors in a long time. If I remember correctly, They are Win3.x or possibly win95 errors.

I believe they all deal with memory managers that those versions of Windows use.

Been a long time since I was a tech and I've drinkin' and smoked a lot since then.. sorry couldn't be more helpful.
