I use it for mainly business, and niche chatting stuff.
I generally have it off though. My ICQ/board nick is a one word fetish, and I get a ton of messages from unknown pervs wanting to chat.

i only use email. there's instant notification so you can practically have back and forth conversations. you can access it on your phone anywhere you are as long as you have a good phone & connection. best thing is its good for keeping records.
