I watched Dateline NBC last Night (it was recorded from Monday night I believe) and I was appauled with what I saw It's a heinous crime in human rights abuse and it's not taken seriously...I was actually sick to my stomach when I saw these 4-6 years old CHILDREN being sold for $30 US. Of course we all like to think this doesn't happen in our Country and that this only happens somewhere else.

No country is immune from human trafficking. Victims are forced into prostitution or to work in quarries and sweatshops, on farms, as domestics, as child soldiers, and in many forms of involuntary servitude. Each year, an estimated 600,000 to 800,000 men, women, and children are trafficked across international borders.

Why isn't this being addressed?!?

A fucking TV show. Now did the writers have insider secrets we didn't know about? Or could it possibly be, we're (and were) aware, very, for the longest time - as the show is a reflection of modern society (and it's ailing institutions). Depicted accurately at that.

Now because the mainstream media turned the switch on, we've a swarm of newly adjusted, mother Teressa's? Don't get me wrong, your topic is preferred to the typical "Would you hit it" thread. However this comes off entirely too naive. It's as if Oprah showcased an episode of Blood diamonds, and you made a topic about how "people are killed for our diamonds, stop buying. I can't see how anyone can be oblivious to this subject, requiring the aide of a piece of shit (controlled) show like Dateline. Take the massively rich Sugar Barons as a prime example...

For decades the hand-cut harvest of sugarcane in Florida was among the greatest domestic disgraces in the US. Until the US Sugar Corporation was indicted in 1942 for violating Constitutional prohibitions against slavery, the then-infant industry lured African-American workers in southern states with promises of free transportation and payment of six dollars a day. In the mid-1990s workers, who for years got less than the legal minimum wage, joined class-action lawsuits to sue the cane growers. Sometimes they succeeded, winning millions of dollars in back wages. Yet the victory prompted industrial manoeuvring rather than lasting justice. For the 1997 season the US Sugar Corporation switched to 100-per-cent mechanical harvesting.

So since the Sugar Barons had fired everyone and were now doing mechanical harvesting, they needed to find a way to also produce sugar cheaply.. so what did they do??? They went further south and did what they had done decades before...

The lush sugar cane fields in places like the Dominican Republic are still tended by men who are expected to cut a ton of sugar a day in stifling 50 degree heat for a mere $2.

When Ellam visited the 240,000 acre spread he found shantytowns full of Haitian sugar cane workers who were lured over the border to work with promises of a good job. Once they arrived they were trapped, kept stateless and forbidden to leave. Central Romana hires 90,000 of the 650,000 Haitian workers on the island.

Workers told him that they were barely paid enough to buy food from the company store - at twice the cost available elsewhere. They could be deported if they left the property to buy goods in town and weren't they allowed to grow vegetables to supplement their diet.

There were no doctors and little medical attention for injured cane workers. Men on horseback wearing pith helmets rode through town regularly to ensure that everybody was kept in line.

So everytime you have some candy.. chocolate.. sugar in your tea, coffee.. or basically eat or drink anything... Think about how we all get so much of what we use and rely on daily due to slavery. In our so called "civilized" societies we can pat ourselves on our back because we don't do that "here" (although it does but we choose to ignore it), but as long as we want cheap goods, others will do it to provide us with what we want.

Right! So let's just sit back and hope it goes away...or even better let's just pretend it isn't happening. I've been aware of human Trafficking for a LONG time. This show just reminded me how horrible it is and as a mother I can relate. I'm not trying to change the world, but I think awareness is a great start. Am I hoping that posting on GFY will make a difference?...No, but I am hoping that maybe one person will read it and maybe make a difference even if small. We happen to be in an industry that deal with sex and unfortunately sometimes children are involved. That's why ASACP is very active in our industry.

Before I was born, my father was in the Navy. He had a brief stint in Egypt, and brought the wife and kids there for a visit. He would get all kinds of offers from the locals, for my two sisters, who were about 8 or 9 at the time.

While I get your point about 'bandwagon hoppers' - the alternative is playing ostrich, burying your head in the sand and remaining apathetic to it all.

Sure...some people don't say or do anything until the message is neatly delivered to them in a slick/sterilized network TV show, but that's the way the world works these days. The majority of us lead busy lives and simply don't have time to devote to activism. That's not to say we don't care, but simply don't have the resources to make a difference.

Of course, a simple msg. post to GFY ain't gonna accomplish much in the grand scheme of things either, but it got you and I motivated to respond, didn't it?

Let's hope that in the network's quest for ratings by airing reports on things like human trafficking - it motivates the right person somehow to get involved in a way that might actually be beneficial.

Oh god! This is not right. I could not stand that this fact is actually happening. I've heard about human trafficking before but never realize how big problem it was. These children (people) have the rights - to live, to freedom, etc. They don't deserve to be slaved of whoever.

Governments of international community should do something about this coz it's no longer a question of trade but question of humanity.

I think their predator series is highly entertaining. It just blows me away that these people think they'll get away with this kind of stuff. And how bold they are! Some of them are taking off their clothes before they even see the other person they plan on having sex with!

Some countries go after it, but mostly the small countries that most of the people come from are so poor that everyone gets bought off. If everyone, including police and politicians, are making money, they sure as shit aren't stopping it. It ends up falling back on everyone else to either deal with it, or hire the A-Team to stop it. And that's just if you can find them and no one else will help.
