Coming to save the motherfuckin' day! A US soldier has been sentenced to 110 years in prison for his role in the rape and murder of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and the killing of her family.

One of the soldiers convicted of the attack, Sgt Paul Cortez, said that Pfc Spielman had stood within a few feet of them as they held down Abeer Qassim al-Janabi and had done nothing to stop them raping her. The soldiers then killed Miss Janabi, her parents and her younger sister.

you'd think that in a world where information and news like this can travel around the globe in a matter of minutes, that they would try to keep a little bit of control over their boys over there. or that there would be more of an uproar over the type of actions taken by the american military in iraq at the moment, but apparently it's pretty easy to overlook when there's juicy gossip about paris hilton to soak up. we can't make it a week without a newer more disgusting story about the actions of american forces coming out of the middle east, yet within a weeks time everyone has forgot the latest in the long list of atrocities and are eagerly awaiting the latest celbrity scandal or new flavour of pepsi. you wouldn't think that they could possibly top the actions taken in vietnam, but it seems like they're almost making a contest out of it now...

I don't really look at it as different side of the picture at all. I mean, who was holding the hand of the Iraqi transitional government the whole time? The same people supporting the American armed forces. They're all pathetic little pawns.

Oh, they keep as much of this shit as hush hush as they can, without a doubt. Between the slightly less extreme yet still offensive acts that take place and the ones that no one ever get caught for, I'm sure she wasn't this was far from the first rape victim or innocent murdered family. At least they actually went ahead and dropped the hammer on these guys for what they did. It's more disgusting how many soldiers have gotten off with a slap on the wrist or less for equally as illegal acts...

Valid point PG and fairly normal with any forces in a conflict scenario - especially over a time span.

On a personal/individual level when you know some of these people - some are just kids - it's hard to ignore what is reality for them. That damage will last long after this war is over.

The "blame" rests at a higher level - it's easy to have wars when your own family will never see a battle front. And, only my , it's criminal to engage and abuse troops under a false pretext - forgetting the higher numbers of innocent civilians likely to be killed.
